What is Bills Backers International?
Bills Backers International (BBI) is an organization that registers individual Buffalo Bills fan clubs located throughout the World and networks them through buffalobills.com, the official website of the Bills. While the chapters are set up as individual entities and schedule their own gatherings, large group events are sponsored several times a year to bring many of the fans together.
The BBI was formed in 1986 to organize existing Bills fan clubs with newly forming groups across the country and around the world.
There were four original clubs who formed the Bills Backers Association: Buffalo Bills Booster Club (formed in 1961), Bills Monday Quarterback Club (organized in 1978), Southern Tier Bills Booster Club (Dunkirk, NY), and Bills Backers, United Kingdom (formed in 1987).
In the decade of the 1990's, the BBI grew to more than 200 chapters with approximately 12,000 members located in 40 states and five countries.
With the advent of satellite TV and internet radio broadcasts, more people are staying in their homes rather than traveling to sports bars and restaurants, and the number of chapters lessened in 2000-01.
A resurgence of interest in the team in the past several years has brought the organization back to about 150 clubs with more than 6,000 members. Individual memberships have also been registered accounting for several thousand more enthusiastic participants.
Truly an international organization, Bills Backers Chapters have been registered around the globe with a large contingent in Germany as well as England, Japan, Hungary, and Australia.
Being part of the organization is a great way to meet and greet fellow Bills fans from around the country and the world. Take it from Bob and Elaine Kreiger who travel from their Central New York home to Port Charlotte, FL each winter, stopping along the way in Virginia, North Carolina and Georgia to meet with other Bills fans while using their BBI directory as a guide. Their truck is decorated with a large charging buffalo, and is a real attention grabber in many states across the country.
