Bills fans draw positive national attention with charitable donations

Posted Jan 3, 2018

Once again, Bills fans near and far have lived up to Buffalo’s “City of Good Neighbors” slogan. They’ve taken they’re passion and excitement for Buffalo’s upcoming trip to the playoffs and used it to give back to a charitable cause.

It was fourth down for Cincinnati and within moments not only would the team’s game against Baltimore be decided, so too would Buffalo’s playoff fate. With :53 seconds left in regulation, Bengals quarterback Andy Dalton connected with wide receiver Tyler Boyd for a touchdown that was heard around the world. In an instant Buffalo franchise history would change forever and as the clock ticked down Bills fans began celebrating. During the frenzy, Bills supporters thought it necessary to thank Dalton for his performance by donating to his Andy & Jordan Dalton Foundation in increments of $17 – an amount representative of the seasons since the Bills’ last playoff appearance.

“I think I’m the hottest guy in Buffalo right now,” said Dalton in his postgame press conference. “According to my Twitter, it looks like everyone is loving us right now. I mean obviously that’s a crazy fan base and they’re all pretty excited.”

While Dalton was also aware that fans were starting to donate to his foundation, I don’t think anyone could have predicted what would happen next.

“We’re appreciative of that,” he said in reference to the donations. “They’re helping out a good cause. It’s been fun to see the reaction that we’ve gotten from them.”

Since the very first fan contribution, over 7,000 donors, including a Bills Backers Chapter, have gotten involved. Overcome with joy from the outpouring of support, Dalton and his foundation have taken to social media to thank Bills fans and to provide updates on how much money has been collected so far. As noted in Dalton’s last update, the total has climbed to an awe-inspiring $170,000 and is still going!

The incredible gesture is a true representation of the kind and caring people of the City of Buffalo and Bills fans all over the world. As the donations continue to roll in at a rapid pace, national media have weighed in on the acts of kindness.

“The donation thing is just fantastic,” said ESPN’s Trey Wingo. To see the Bills fans do that… fans all over, not just Buffalo...[is great]. To see their outpouring of thanks in a positive way for what Andy Dalton did to help their team get to the playoffs is just amazing. Over 100-thousand dollars worth of donations to his foundation. That’s awesome. What we’re seeing out of what’s happened in Buffalo with the reaction of not only the joy of the players and fans, but what has also happened with Dalton’s foundation is just remarkable.”

Not only have Bills fans gained attention from media all over the country, they’re being recognized by Bills players such as center Eric Wood and even other athletes such as Logan Couture of the San Jose Sharks.
