Bills sign free agent WR Anquan Boldin

Posted Aug 7, 2017

The Bills patience paid off as Buffalo signed free agent WR Anquan Boldin.

Bills GM Brandon Beane said a couple of weeks ago that Anquan Boldin needed time to assess his family situation before deciding whether to play NFL football in 2017. Buffalo’s patience with Boldin was rewarded Monday as Boldin signed with the Bills.

Buffalo welcomed the veteran wideout to One Bills Drive on a free agent visit last month, and he met with members of the coaching staff, but it took him a couple of weeks to determine he would play a 15th season.

The addition of Boldin provides a proven scoring weapon in Buffalo’s passing offense. The veteran receiver led the Detroit Lions last year with eight touchdowns and was second on the team with 67 receptions.

Set to turn 37 in October, Boldin is still a viable possession receiver capable of making clutch catches for first downs and extending drives. At 6-1 and a sturdy 220 pounds he remains a dependable red zone threat as well.

Boldin is a former teammate of Bills quarterback Tyrod Taylor, as the two were teammates in Baltimore for two seasons including the Ravens Super Bowl-winning season of 2012.

Where Boldin would fit on Buffalo’s depth chart at receiver is difficult to peg with what is largely a jumble behind top wideout Sammy Watkins. But he’ll likely battle for a top three role in the wide receiving corps.

To make room on the roster for Boldin the Bills designated TE Keith Towbridge waived/injured.
