Brownie Points - Week 14

Posted Dec 12, 2017

Here's a look at four critical plays in Buffalo's overtime victory over the Colts that may have been overlooked in our latest edition of Brownie Points.

After every win there are the highlight reel plays that everyone remembers that were critical to victory. But there are always a handful of plays that were critical to the outcome that often go unrecognized. After each Bills win I’ll be highlighting a few plays that were important to the victory that you may not have noticed.

In addition I’ll be assessing Brownie points for those players responsible for making those plays in a race for the Golden Brownie award at season’s end. Here’s a look at the players earning Brownie points for the Week 14 win over Indianapolis.

More on how Bills fans can nominate players for Brownie Points after Buffalo victories below.

Play 1 - Sealing the deal
Overtime – 1:33 left – Bills ball, 3rd-and-4 at the Colts 21
– The Bills go with heavy personnel on the left side of the line with Ryan Groy as a tackle eligible and Nick O’Leary as an inline tight end. At the snap, Richie Incognito helps to channel Colts DT Jonathan Hankins away from the hole to Dion Dawkins, then climbs to the second level and locks out LB Antonio Morrison.

Dawkins turns Hankins outside using his momentum against him while Groy seals off Margus Hunt. Meanwhile on the right side of the line, Eric Wood and Vlad Ducasse combo block Al Woods before Ducasse picks up onrushing linebacker Jonathan Bostic. Jordan Mills walls off Jabaal Sheard.

McCoy picks the hole between Incognito and Dawkins and has only safety Mattias Farley to beat through to reach the open field. Ball game.
8 points – Richie Incognito

Play 2 – Gobbing up Gore
3rd quarter – Colts ball, 13:47 left – 3rd-and-5 at the Colts 45 –
Frank Gore has been the bulk of the Colts offense and was more than halfway to 100 yards at the half. After gaining five yards on his first two carries of the second half, Indy turns to him again on third down. Gore takes the inside hand-off, but is immediately met by Adolphus Washington at the line of scrimmage.

That’s because Washington has deftly avoided the cut block attempt by Colts RG Joe Haeg, keeps his feet, and has a clear path to Gore. Washington gets both arms around Gore’s waist at the line of scrimmage and holds on until help arrives in the form of Matt Milano and Eddie Yarbrough.

The play forced the Colts to punt following the no gain play.
6 points – Adolphus Washington

Play 3 – Back shoulder beauty
2nd quarter - :38 left – Bills ball, 3rd-and-7 at the Colts 29 –
Nate Peterman sees that he has Kelvin Benjamin on his right in man coverage with a single safety high. He takes a five-step drop and looks to his left and the middle of the field to hold the safety. Then he uncorks a perfect strike to Benjamin’s back shoulder along the right sideline.

The ball location was perfect as it enabled Benjamin to make a play while not giving Colts CB Kenny Moore to even make a play on the ball.

One play after the 21-yard pickup, Peterman and Benjamin hooked up for an eight-yard touchdown.
4 points – Nate Peterman

Play 4 – Get to Brissett
3rd quarter – 3:25 left – Colts ball, 3rd-and-10 at the Indianapolis 38 –
The Colts go with a three-receiver set with Jacoby Brissett in the shotgun. The Bills are playing off coverage in front of the sticks. At the snap the Colts offensive line holds good initial protection. Adolphus Washington is double teamed, Cap Capi is steered wide and Kyle Williams and Eddie Yarbrough appear neutralized at the outset.

After the back releases out of the backfield, Williams uses that same lane to execute a lefty swim move over Colts RG Joe Haeg, and is quickly in the backfield. With good coverage on the back end, Williams has time to close on Brissett and hit him. Brissett fires the ball away quickly to avoid the sack.

The ball falls harmlessly incomplete forcing the Colts to punt. Without Kyle Williams second effort, the play doesn’t happen.
2 points – Kyle Williams
