How fans helped the Bills earn their fourth straight Responsibility Bowl title

Posted Feb 21, 2018

With your help, Bills fans, the Buffalo Bills have been named Responsibility Bowl champions for the fourth consecutive season.

In 2017, the Buffalo Bills took steps forward both on and off the field. Through hard work, perseverance and dedication to one another, the Bills advanced to the AFC Wild Card, ending a 17-season playoff drought. Additionally, with help from the Bills fans who set a positive example for those around them each game day, Buffalo was named the Responsibility Bowl champions for the fourth consecutive season.

An annual competition that aims to encourage responsible drinking and fan behavior, the Responsibility Bowl gives NFL teams a chance to compete to gain support for their Designated Drivers programs. Fans assisted the Bills on the path to the championship by participating in the Bud Light Good Sport Program during regular season games at New Era Field and on social media. By signing up for the program, Bills fans pledged to remain sober on game days to ensure that their friends and family got home safely. Fans also took to Twitter and Facebook to share the important message by using the hashtag #BillsFansNeverDriveDrunk. The program uses both designated driver signups and social media mentions to determine team points. The total number of fans who sign up counts as a touchdown and is multiplied by six, while each social media mention counts as an additional extra point.

The Bills came away with a big victory over the Vikings in the competition’s first round, scoring 15,312 points to Minnesota’s 1,452. After defeating the Broncos and Ravens in the second and third rounds, the Bills found themselves up against AFC East opponent the New England Patriots in the championship. Thanks to 3,169 designated drivers and an extra push from fans on social media, the Bills defeated the Patriots to secure the Responsibility Bowl title.

Finishing the 2017 campaign with a record number of designated driver pledges (26,386), Bills fans proved once again that they’re dedicated to making game days at New Era Field a safe and enjoyable experience for everyone. Additionally, the Bills set a single-game record with 4,782 signups during the team’s Week 3 matchup against Denver.

“Our valued Bills fans have shown how much they care about their game day experience by winning the Responsibility Bowl for the fourth straight season, and our team remains as committed as ever to promote responsible fan behavior,” said Andy Major, Buffalo Bills vice president of operations and guest experience. “We appreciate the loyal and passionate fans who are responsible, respectful and courteous to their fellow fans and help create such a positive, fun, and exciting atmosphere at New Era Field. We also thank the greatest fans in the NFL for their record number of designated driver pledges!”

The Bills continue to make great strides off the field by fostering positive relationships with their game day partners and significantly reducing the number of incidents to help improve the Fan Experience. The Bills partnership with TEAM Coalition and MADD has been a vital part of the team’s responsibility messaging program.
