At each home game during the 2017 season, the Buffalo Bills will honor a military member during the game’s third quarter break presented by BENRUS. The military members honored the first week of the preseason were Able Seaman Lawrence E. Haley and Specialist 4th Class John Lindsley.

The Buffalo Bills will honor a military member each home game during the third quarter break, presented by BENRUS, a legendary brand with rich military history. At the first preseason game against the Minnesota Vikings, two special military members were recognized - Able Seaman Lawrence E. Haley and Specialist 4th Class John Lindsley.

For as long as Mary Pinter can remember, her father Lawrence Haley and her significant other John Lindsley have been loyal Bills fans. Unlike their typical Bills tradition of watching the games from the comfort of their home, for the Bills versus Vikings preseason game, they made their way to New Era Field for a memory that will last a lifetime.

Lawrence Haley served as a Merchant Marine during World War II and then as an Able Seaman from 1944 to 1946. At the time, many supply ships sunk but never a ship that Haley was on, earning him the title “lucky charm” and making him a favorited passenger. During his years of service, Haley witnessed many monumental events. On D-Day in 1944, Haley was serving at sea on one of the first ships to arrive in Normandy while his brother served on shore. Haley was all set to go to Japan for his last tour before President Truman ended the war. He was awarded the Atlantic War Zone Medal and the Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal for his service.

Similarly, John Lindsley served as a radio operator during the Vietnam War from 1968 to 1969. While he does not share as many stories as Haley, Lindsley continues to volunteer with veterans and is proud to have served the country.

To honor all of their hard work and dedication to our nation, the Buffalo Bills brought Haley and Lindsley onto the field during the third quarter break, presented by BENRUS. Though each have had their fair share of nerve-racking experiences, they both felt jittery as they waited in the tunnel to walk onto the field. The nerves quickly diminished when they heard the overwhelming cheering from the crowd. Earning a standing ovation, the duo was left smiling “from ear to ear, all the way through the fourth quarter and on the hour-long drive home,” stated Pinter. Though they’ve made many fond memories from watching Bills games over the years, this will be one they share for years to come.
