At each home game during the 2017 season, the Buffalo Bills will honor a military member during the game’s third quarter break presented by BENRUS, a legendary brand with rich military history. Specialist Benjamin Stryker was honored during the Week 7 game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Specialist Benjamin Stryker knew he wanted to join the military since eighth grade. Though he came from a long line of military ties – his parents met while serving – it was the film “Black Hawk Down” that sealed his decision.

“I saw that movie and knew that is what I wanted to do,” stated Specialist Stryker.

Following high school, Specialist Stryker enlisted at the young age of 18. After completing Infantry School, he was deployed to Task Force One Fury for a tour in Afghanistan in support of Operation Enduring Freedom. He was awarded several medals throughout his years of service, including the Combat Infantryman Badge.

Being honored during the third quarter break for his years of service was an overwhelming experience for Specialist Styker.

“I thought the crowd was as loud as it could get at one point, but then it just got even louder,” stated Specialist Styker. “It was an amazing experience to see how Buffalo really does care about their people, their service and their football team.”

Specialist Styker was honored at this year’s Crucial Catch game, a NFL initiative that aims to help intercept cancer. Throughout last week and the game, several cancer survivors were honored.

Unfortunately, cancer is something that Specialist Styker knows all too well. While in high school, his mother was diagnosed with breast cancer. Throughout high school and well into his years in the military, Specialist Styker’s mother fought for her life, while her son fought for our country. Sadly, Specialist Styker’s mother lost her battle to cancer two months after he returned from Afghanistan.

As he stood before the entire stadium, he was honored for his years of service and the years his mother spent battling cancer.

When he returned to the tunnel to meet with his family, he was reunited with a friend and current mother figure in his life, an individual named Dee Miller who beat breast cancer.

“I feel like my mom placed certain people in my life and she’s one of them,” stated Specialist Styker. “I definitely felt my mom there with me [at the game].”

Specialist Styker is still involved with the military, working these days at Eagle Star Housing in East Pembroke, New York. There, he helps homeless veterans get back on their feet.

“Working with veterans is probably my best therapy, it’s what I want to do with the rest of my life,” stated Specialist Styker, who plans to return to school to pursue a degree in human services.
