Quick Hits II: Bills see Taylor on their roster

Posted Feb 28, 2018

Bills GM Brandon Beane addressed the immediate future of Tyrod Taylor and how the signing of Vontae Davis doesn't affect the desire to re-sign E.J. Gaines. And head coach Sean McDermott addressed the team's new approach with analytics.

Bills see Taylor on their roster
There has been much speculation about Tyrod Taylor’s future on the Bills roster, despite being a big part of Buffalo reaching the postseason for the first time in 17 years. The free agent quarterback market combined with a draft class that offers some quality first round talent at the position, it makes sense that the Bills are doing their due diligence in an effort to upgrade every position on their roster including quarterback.

But at this point in time GM Brandon Beane sees Taylor on Buffalo’s roster.

“Tyrod is on our roster right now and that’s the plan,” said Beane. “We’re just taking it day by day. We’re trying to get better everywhere, so we’re looking at every position including quarterback, but Tyrod did a lot of good things for us. So I’m not really worried about the (roster) bonus. I see him on our roster right now. Unless something changes he’ll be here through that part.”

Taylor’s roster bonus is due on March 16th.

Head coach Sean McDermott echoed Beane’s comments and stated plainly that Taylor will not be released. However, when asked specifically about possibly trading Taylor he would not rule it out.

“At this point in the process I’ve learned being around this league around 20 years that it’s way too early to take anything off the table, other than cutting him at this point, which is not in our plans,” McDermott said. “He’s a good football player who has been instrumental in getting us to the playoffs. At this point in the process, whether it’s Tyrod or any of our players, you look at what’s out there, you look at your options and you make decisions based on the best interests of your football team.”

Davis signing doesn’t impact Gaines
Buffalo signed free agent CB Vontae Davis on Tuesday this week helping to bolster a position that will likely see some of the team’s free agents reach the free agent market. But Bills GM Brandon Beane doesn’t believe the signing of Davis negatively affects their desire to bring E.J. Gaines back into the fold.

“We’re still open to bringing E.J. back,” said Beane. “E.J. did a lot of good things for us. Signing Vontae (Davis) does not mean it’s the end of the road for E.J. here in Buffalo,” said Bills GM Brandon Beane. “It takes two like any of these guys. We have a lot of free agents, what the value is, what someone else is willing to pay and what we can afford to pay will all go into that decision.”

Beane did express the belief that a good number of his free agents will be interested in seeing what they value is on the open market instead of re-signing with the Bills before the market opens. So the Bills may have to hope and wait that some of their free agents will see a soft market and reestablish contact with the club.

New analytics head will be football based
The Bills decided to make changes in their analytics department this offseason and their new director of analytics, Louis Guilamo, will have a much greater role than his predecessor when it comes to the football side of the house.

That according to head coach Sean McDermott, who provided a thumbnail sketch on the duties Guilamo’s position will entail.

“It’s football-based, football analytics,” McDermott said. “It will not be involved on the business side at this point. It’s about us growing, us evolving and becoming better. It’s a part of what we’ll do. It’ll be involved, whether it’s personnel, game-management, it’s just about information gathering and building overall awareness on whatever it might be. I’m confident it’ll help us get to the next level in some areas.”
