Bills to face Pats in Monday Night opener

Posted Mar 23, 2009

When the Monday Night schedule opens on Sept. 14 the Bills will be part of the prime time lineup. The NFL announced Monday that the New England Patriots will host the Buffalo Bills as part of its 2009 Kickoff Weekend “AFL 50th” doubleheader.

ESPN will host a Monday Night Football doubleheader that will be part of the NFL’s celebration of the 50th anniversary season of the American Football League. Buffalo will be part of the first Monday night game on Kickoff Weekend as they travel to Foxboro to visit the Patriots for a 7 pm kickoff.

The game will pit two of the most prolific receivers of this generation as Buffalo’s Terrell Owens goes toe-to-toe with New England’s Randy Moss. The two receivers rank first and second over the past four years in touchdowns scored with 38 and 37 respectively.

For the Bills it’s their third Monday Night Football appearance on Kickoff Weekend in team history. Buffalo is 1-1 in their previous two games (9/16/74 vs. OAK, W 21-20; 9/13/76 vs. MIA, L 21-30).

Buffalo is 9-8 overall and 8-5 in road games against AFC East opponents on Monday Night. The Sept. 14 game will mark the fifth primetime contest between Buffalo and New England.

The MNF nightcap (10:15 pm) will be an AFC West battle as the Oakland Raiders host the three-time defending AFC West champion San Diego Chargers

The rest of the 2009 regular-season schedule will be completed and announced in April.
