Bills trade McCargo

Posted Oct 14, 2008

The Bills made a trade before the NFL deadline Tuesday afternoon, it just wasn’t the one everyone was expecting. Instead of adding a player Buffalo made a subtraction sending defensive tackle John McCargo to the Indianapolis Colts for an undisclosed draft pick.

The Colts have been in desperate need for defensive tackle help since losing Quinn Pitcock and Ed Johnson. Pitcock retired suddenly this past offseason at age 24 and Johnson, a former starter, was released in Week 2 after he was arrested for marijuana possession.

Ranked 29th against the run allowing more than 160 rushing yards a game, Indianapolis has been starting 2007 seventh-round draft pick Keyunta Johnson and undrafted rookie free agent Eric Foster. Neither weigh more than 265 pounds. McCargo, now in his third season, had been unable to land a starting role in Buffalo’s defense since the Bills made him a first-round pick back in 2006.

His playing time was limited this season as he had fallen farther down the depth chart with the offseason acquisitions of defensive tackles Marcus Stroud and Spencer Johnson.

He still shows signs of promise, but the Bills apparently felt the defensive tackle was expendable. For his Bills career, McCargo appeared in 25 games.
