Fox to bolster depleted secondary

Posted Nov 21, 2008

With Jabari Greer’s status very much up in the air for Sunday’s game and only three healthy cornerbacks on the roster, the Bills promoted defensive back Dustin Fox to the 53-man roster Friday.

“He’s a guy that knows us,” said Jauron. “He also has played safety and corner for us and that provides us with options as well.”

Fox was signed to the team’s practice squad last week in response to Donte Whitner’s shoulder injury combined with Ashton Youboty’s move to injured reserve.

“At that position you probably always need somebody waiting,” said head coach Dick Jauron. “Those guys are always used a lot on defense and special teams. Ashton went to I-R and Donte was hurt and we didn’t have anybody.”

But now the need for Fox is even greater.

Fox appeared in six games for the Bills last season playing mainly on special teams. In this past summer’s training camp Fox got reps at both safety and cornerback.

In all likelihood he’ll be preparing in a backup capacity at cornerback and nickel corner, with Whitner and Greer both iffy for Sunday’s game at Kansas City. Reggie Corner and Leodis McKelvin are expected to handle the starting roles if Whitner and Greer are unavailable.

Buggs to I-R
To make room for Fox on the active roster, rookie linebacker Marcus Buggs was placed on injured reserve. Buggs, who had played mainly on special teams since being called up to the active roster late last month, suffered a high ankle sprain in the Monday night game against Cleveland.
