Buffalo signed K Dan Carpenter on Tuesday in the wake of a reported injury to K Dustin Hopkins

For the second straight week injury has prompted the Bills to sign a free agent at a position of need. Buffalo signed free agent kicker Dan Carpenter Tuesday after a reported injury was suffered by rookie kicker Dustin Hopkins.

Carpenter, 27, who was cut by the Miami Dolphins after five seasons with the club (2007-2012), has been subsequently signed and released by the Jets and Cardinals in the past two weeks.

A career 82 percent field goal kicker, Carpenter (6-2, 228) has a long leg with a career long of 60 yards. He also has a success rate of almost 70 percent from 40-yards plus (69.5%) in his five NFL seasons. He was selected for the Pro Bowl in 2009.

Carpenter was released by Miami after he lost a training camp battle with Dolphins fifth-round pick Caleb Sturgis on Aug. 14th. The move also saved the Dolphins better than $2 million on their salary cap.
