LB Jamaal Westerman has been signed by the Bills

Not long after creating roster vacancies with a pair of player releases the past two days, Buffalo filled one of them with a linebacker, signing Jamaal Westerman. The four-year veteran originally signed with the New York Jets as an undrafted rookie in 2009, the first year Mike Pettine served as defensive coordinator with New York.

Westerman, 28, would go on to appear in 36 games for the Jets from 2009-2011 including three starts in 2011. He split the 2012 season between Arizona and Indianapolis appearing in five games for the Cardinals and four games for the Colts late last year counting their AFC Wild Card playoff game.

At 6’3” 255 pounds, Westerman is a good-sized linebacker, who is best at rushing off the edge. He’s expected to line up at outside linebacker for Buffalo.

Knowing Westerman’s familiarity with Pettine’s scheme, he should get himself acclimated quickly in Buffalo’s defense. The Rutgers product represents competition for the likes of Jamie Blatnick, Kourtnei Brown and Marcus Dowtin.

He will wear No. 93 with Buffalo.
