Stevie: "We've got to be better"

Posted Aug 12, 2012

Coming back from a day off and a preseason opener that left something to be desired on offense, head coach Chan Gailey had an offensive team meeting Saturday. Stevie Johnson took the meeting to heart, which is why he was visibly disappointed the offense had lost the series to the defense at the end of practice Saturday. He believes Thursday night’s preseason game should serve as a wake-up call for a team that wants to be a contender.

“We’ve got to be better,” he said. “Preseason game, practice we’ve got to be better if we want to get to where we want to be. Mentally we’ve got to prepare like champions. We’ve got to be past the whole let’s play this many games in a row. We’ve got to be thinking like champions right now, aggressive and dominant. That’s it.”

Head coach Chan Gailey was glad Johnson wasn't satisfied and was demanding better from himself and his teammates.

“Good I’m glad he feels that way," said Gailey. "If everybody doesn’t feel that way we’re in trouble. I want everybody to understand we had an offensive meeting (Saturday) about that very thing. We made progress last year, but it’s not just going to happen because we did it last year. You’ve got to go make it happen again this year.”

Johnson is tired of losing more games than he wins every season, and is determined to make 2012 the season where the team finally gets over the playoff hump.

"There’s only so long where you can be the old Bills just getting beat around in this conference," he said. "It’s time to turn it around and take over. I think we’ve got the team that can do it this year. So why not go out there and go hard and try to take this division?”
