Bills sign OL Meredith; Butler to I-R

Posted Sep 22, 2009

Knowing Brad Butler's season was over after his knee injury suffered Sunday, the Bills made quick work of assessing the talent that was available signing OL Jamon Meredith off of Green Bay's practice squad.

Meredith (6'5", 305) was a fifth-round pick of the Packers this past spring and has experience playing both tackle and guard in his college career. The South Carolina product was a three-year starter for the Gamecocks playing both left and right tackle his first two years before moving inside to left guard as a senior.

The newest offensive lineman for the Bills fits the profile of the type of player offensive line coach Sean Kugler is looking for as he has changed the culture of his unit into a tougher, smarter and more dedicated group.

Meredith was considered one of the most intelligent offensive linemen in the SEC as he finished school with a 3.74 grade-point average. He received his school's award for academic excellence in 2008.

It's believed that Meredith will be a reserve player at both guard and tackle for the Bills, while Jonathan Scott continues to man the starting right tackle position.

To make room on the roster for Meredith, the Bills placed Butler on injured reserve.

Bowen released
Buffalo also released linebacker Alvin Bowen from the practice squad. The former fifth-round pick was replaced by a rookie linebacker Marcus Freeman. Freeman was a fifth-round pick of the Chicago Bears this past spring out of Ohio State.
