Bills release LB Thomas

Posted Sep 2, 2009

The Bills made another roster move Wednesday parting ways with linebacker Pat Thomas.

Buffalo signed Thomas this past offseason as a free agent after he had been a starter at middle linebacker for the Kansas City Chiefs in 2008. Through the early stages of training camp he was battling Marcus Buggs for the backup middle linebacker job behind Paul Posluszny.

Thomas and Buggs had flip flopped back and forth on an almost daily basis between the second and third team defenses in training camp up until the time Thomas suffered an injury.

Thomas missed valuable time on the field during the preseason because of it allowing Buggs to further solidify his standing as the backup middle linebacker. The team also signed another free agent middle linebacker in Ryan Manalac as Thomas' injury lingered.

In recent days Thomas had tried to return to the practice field in the hopes of participating in the preseason finale, but it apparently wasn't soon enough.

"We really only saw him in OTAs and minicamp," said head coach Dick Jauron. "He practiced the past couple of days. It's just one of those things numbers-wise where we just wanted to get down even further and we did."

Buffalo's roster is now down to 74 players. They now have nine linebackers remaining on the squad.
