COMMUNITY
Fred was chosen as the 2010 winner of the Buffalo Bills/NFL Walter Payton Man of the Year Award and continued his strong community work into 2011. Fred was one of several Bills players in attendance with their families at the second annual lighting of Niagara Falls on October 7th. Bills players were on hand to sign autographs and greet fans before the falls were lit pink to raise awareness for the fight against breast cancer. Fred and his wife Danielle were at the event – part of the 6th Annual Billieve Breast Cancer Awareness Campaign.
In November, Fred served as one of 18 Bills players who travelled to Holland, NY to formally announce H.O. Brumstead Elementary as the Buffalo Bills “Play 60 Super School.” The school received a $10,000 grant for health and wellness initiatives and held an Ultimate Physical Education class led by Bills players.
By participating in the Bills’ Community Ticket Program, Fred was able to assist numerous young fans throughout the season. Freddy’s Fanatics were on hand each game and also received food and beverage coupons compliments of Fred.
Fred was one of six Bills who supported the 2011 Kids Escaping Drugs Campaign “Stay Strong” to fight against teen drug use. Fred sat in on an autograph session at the Boulevard Mall on September 27th that gathered over $8,000 to raise awareness for the campaign.
Fred also helped make an already special event even more special when he and five teammates appeared at UB’s Alumni Arena for the 2012 New York State Special Olympics Opening Ceremonies. Fred and his teammates formed a line and welcomed each athlete and posed for pictures as they marched into the arena.
Fred was one of the many Buffalo Bills participants in the NFL’s first-ever Play 60 Ultimate Field Day for kids ages 12 and under. The Ultimate Field Day allowed children the opportunity to run football drills with their favorite Bills players in Ralph Wilson Stadium on the very same field where the Bills play their games. Children had the opportunity to get their picture taken in front of the charging buffalo logo at midfield and get autographs from Bills players, as well.
On September 27th, more than 2,800 Buffalo and Orchard Park area elementary school students packed the auditorium at Kleinhans Music Hall for the Play 60 Challenge Annual Kickoff event. Fred was one of 14 Bills players who addressed the students and encouraged them to get motivated toward a healthy and active lifestyle.
Fred later helped contribute to the 6th Annual 97 Rock Operation: Rock Out Hunger to benefit the Food Bank of WNY. Held in the Quaker Steak & Lube parking lot in Williamsville, Fred and his teammates showed up to help collect food donations and meet fans who showed up to contribute.
Fred also joined in to assist the Buffalo Bills Toyota Rookie Club at their 2011 Holiday Party held in the Jim Kelly Club in Ralph Wilson Stadium. The club was decorated in a North Pole theme and hosted a group of 100 children from various local agencies.
