Bills head coach Chan Gailey did not paint a pretty picture for the trio of offensive players hurt in Saturday's win over Denver. Left tackle Demetrius Bell, center Kraig Urbik and tight end Mike Caussin all left last weekend's game with knee injuries and did not return.
Gailey provided a grim update on all three Monday with respect to Sunday's season finale at New England.
"Urbik is out. Bell is out and Caussin is out," he said.
When asked if all three are headed for offseason surgery Gailey said he's pretty sure all three will go under the knife, but wasn't 100 percent certain.
Buffalo finished Saturday's game with rookie Chris Hairston at left tackle and second-year lineman Colin Brown seeing his first NFL action at center. Brown started off a bit shaky by Gailey's description, but did settle down as the game wore on. Gailey said Brown will start at center on Sunday in Foxborough.
"I want to make sure that we get the five guys that are on the field knowing what to do," said Gailey. "It's a great opportunity for the guys that are going to play now to get some experience and show what they can do."
With Urbik and Bell going down 60 percent of Buffalo's opening day offensive line was lost to serious inury this season. Bell already missed eight games with a fractured collar bone, and was making his second straight start against Denver before suffering a knee and ankle injury Saturday.
Urbik also missed a couple of starts in Weeks 3 and 4, but returned and served as Eric Wood's replacement at center the last four games.
With just one game remaining Gailey was undecided as to whether any of the injured players would be placed on injured reserve to call up reinforcements for Buffalo's offensive line or the tight end position.
"We'll do what we think we need to do," he said. "Buddy (Nix) and I have talked about it once and I'm sure we'll talk about it again exactly what we need to do. We don't want to just bring somebody up just to bring them up. If we don't think they have a chance to play we don't want to do that."
Buffalo currently has 14 players on injured reserve.
Gailey said WR Kamar Aiken, who sustained an undisclosed injury in Saturday's game would be fine to play this week.
