The Bills got a head start Sunday in reducing their roster to the required 80 player limit by 4 pm Tuesday releasing six players.
DB Rajric Coleman, RB Anthony Elzy, P Reid Forrest, WR Paul Hubbard, CB Loyce Means and OL Isaiah Thompson were all waived by the Bills a day after the team's third preseason game against Jacksonville.
Hubbard is the only player that was not a 2011 undrafted rookie. A former sixth-round pick of the Cleveland Browns (2008), Hubbard was on Buffalo's practice squad last season. He was called up to the active roster late last year when injuries depleted the team's receiving corps. He made his first career start in the season finale against the Jets last season recording one catch for eight yards.
The 26-year old receiver was arguably coming off the best preseason performance of his career Saturday night when he had five catches for 47 yards including a touchdown and a two-point conversion.
Hubbard's four-yard touchdown reception with 38 seconds remaining brought the Bills to within two (32-30). He followed that up with his two-point conversion to tie the game and force overtime.
Coleman, Elzy, Forrest, Means and Thompson were all third string players that were in a really tough spot to truly impress the coaching staff without the benefit of spring camps due to the NFL lockout this past offseason.
With the cuts the roster is down to 81 players, leaving Buffalo's coaching staff with just one more release to make before Tuesday's deadline.
