After years of anticipation, the herd is finally here.
Work on the bison sculptures will continue for another month, but the newest pieces at Highmark Stadium are now installed in their permanent home at Family Circle.
Earlier this week, workers set up the 22-foot-tall, 23-foot-long cow, which weighs about 23,000 pounds. To cap it off, they later added the 27-foot-tall, 29-foot-long bull. The calf was placed in late June.
Internationally recognized sculptor Blessing Hancock designed these sculptures to represent family, strength, resilience and Western New York's enduring spirit. ART Research Enterprises in Lancaster, Pa. fabricated and installed the bison.
"Faceted stainless-steel surfaces catch and reflect shifting light, revealing new angles as people pass by," said Hancock. "The bison hold their ground as one, their shapes suggesting both momentum and togetherness. Bull, cow, and calf, each distinct, yet all part of Buffalo's enduring strength, generation to generation."
Each bison has a steel frame and a stainless-steel exterior that can withstand weather and time. The bull and cow can release smoke from their nostrils, giving the appearance of breathing on a cold Western New York night. Various programmable lighting systems will light up the statues at night, and each sculpture features an illuminated "charge" from the Bills logo.
"As the Bison statues and plaques are placed in the Family Circle at Highmark Stadium, it's incredibly rewarding to see this vision come to life," said Frank Cravotta, Buffalo Bills Senior VP of Design. "This remarkable space allows Bills Mafia to gather, connect, and celebrate our team's legacy as well as the rich history and spirit of Western New York."
The installation will be surrounded by placards honoring many of the greats in franchise history. Family Circle, located by the north entrance of Highmark Stadium, also features an illuminated, museum-quality display celebrating the history of Western New York.
"Happy. Relieved. Grateful. I can't wait for them to be surrounded by the Bills family and fans," Hancock added. "A special thanks to the Bills Highmark Stadium design team, Art Research Enterprises, and the dedicated designers, engineers, fabricators, and lighting specialists who brought this vision to life."
