Inside the Bills - Aug 1

Replacing Bowen?
Posted By: Chris Brown | Time: 11:57 PM ET

REPLACING BOWEN?: If Bowen is indeed out for the entire season, I wouldn't be surprised if the Bills replace him with a veteran talent sitting out there in free agency.

One player they brought in for a workout this past spring was Donnie Spragan, formerly of the Dolphins and Broncos. He's a seven-year vet that's 32-years old and can offer good depth and special teams help.

His best season came in 2004 when he was a full-time starter for the Broncos logging 67 tackles, a sack and five pass breakups. He's strictly an outside linebacker.

Vets get a break

VETS GET A BREAK: Kawika Mitchell was dealing with some general soreness so he along with Chris Kelsay, Marcus Stroud and a couple of others did not participate in many team reps Friday.

Will James however, did suffer a groin injury early in practice according to Dick Jauron and was pulled out of the workout early. No word yet on the severity of the injury.

Whitner calmed Bowen

WHITNER CALMED BOWEN: As the training staff was preparing to lift Alvin Bowen into a cart following his severe knee injury, Bowen was angry and upset.

As the action moved to the other side of the field, Donte Whitner stopped over after seeing how upset Bowen was and tried to help him get his emotions under control.

"Just calm down," said Whitner.

Bowen did relax a little bit as his frustration turned to disappointment.

Not anything you want to see on a football field, but nice to witness Whitner taking the time to tend briefly to a fallen teammate.

ROOKIE WRS LIMITED: Both Steve Johnson and James Hardy returned to practice but it appears to be on a limited basis.

Both worked during individual drills, but haven't taken team reps to this point.

Ko Simpson participating

SIMPSON PARTICIPATING: Ko Simpson is participating in team work in 11-on-11. To this point he seems to be fine.

Wouldn't be surprised if Simpson was just unsure about his ankle and the MRI put his mind at ease.

SIMPSON PARTICIPATING: Ko Simpson is back with his teammates and participating in the closed morning walk through. It remains to be seen if he participates in the afternoon practice but his ankle is not wrapped in any fashion.

Hardy returns to practice

HARDY BACK: James Hardy wasn't going to watch practice very long. After being forced to sit by trainers last night as a precaution with a tight hamstring, the hard-working Hardy was back participating with teammates in the closed morning walk through.

Hardy's work ethic was praised by Dick Jauron Thursday night as the rookie receiver seems close to turning a corner with the offensive system. He'll likely be participating in the afternoon pads workout.
