It was an expected move after head coach Chan Gailey indicated that Fred Jackson's season was over after the veteran running back sustained a sprained MCL in Buffalo's Week 14 game against the Rams. Jackson was placed on injured reserve Tuesday.

It's been an unlucky two seasons for Jackson. He missed the last six games of the 2011 season, when he was part of the league MVP discussion, due to a fractured fibula suffered at Miami in Week 11.

This season Jackson was eager to pick up where he left off last year, but his season was quickly derailed by a sprained LCL suffered in Week 1 at the Jets. After missing the next two games he returned to action, but was sidelined by a concussion sustained in the Week 10 loss at New England and missed the subsequent Thursday night game against the Dolphins.

His latest MCL sprain will force him to miss the last three games of the year, meaning for the second straight season he'll be sidelined for six games due to injury.

DT Ross promotedDT Jay Ross has been promoted to the 53-man roster to take Jackson's vacant roster sport.

Ross (6'3" 319) spent portions of the 2011 and 2012 season on the team's Practice Squad and 53-man roster. A three-year starter at East Carolina, Ross entered the NFL as an undrafted free agent with New Orleans in 2010. He'll wear jersey number 69.

Bills add RB Brown to practice squadThe Bills also gave themselves a bit of insurance at the running back position with just a pair of tailbacks on the active roster in C.J. Spiller and Tashard Choice. Buffalo signed RB Zach Brown to the practice squad.

The rookie running back originally signed with Buffalo back on Aug. 2, and was released prior to the regular season. Brown participated in the team's rookie minicamp on a tryout basis in May.

Brown, (5'10", 220) rushed for 357 yards on 82 carries with five touchdowns in 11 games at Pittsburgh in 2011. Prior to Pitt, Brown was a three-year letterman at Wisconsin where he totaled 1,152 yards and 11 touchdowns on 240 carries in 36 games with nine starts from 2007-10.

He fills the vacant practice squad spot that had been held by Ross.
