P Cameron Johnston to "miss some time" with foot/ankle & more Bills injury updates ahead of Week 5

The Buffalo Bills will be searching for a new punter this week ahead of their Week 5 matchup against the Patriots.

Bills head coach Sean McDermott told reporters Monday afternoon that P Cameron Johnston will miss time with a foot/ankle injury.

"He'll miss some time. No word on the timetable exactly right now," McDermott said.

Johnston suffered the injury during the second half Sunday's Week 4 win against the Saints after a defender collided with him on a punt attempt. The collision drew a roughing the kicker penalty and Johnston needed assistance from the trainers getting back to the sideline.

As the Bills get set for their third consecutive home game and their first meeting of the season against New England, Buffalo will be in the market for a punter for at least this week.

"We will bring some punters in to take a look at them, and then we'll go from there on that," McDermott said.

Johnston signed with the Bills on Sept. 9 after the team released previous punter Brad Robbins.

Three players eligible to return from injured reserve

CB Maxwell Hairston, OL Tylan Grable and K Tyler Bass are all eligible to return from IR this week and have their 21-day practice window opened.

McDermott said he "wants them all back as soon as possible" but did not specify how close they are to returning or if the team will open their practice window this week.

"Those decisions will be made at the right time; conversations will be had. So, we'll go forward with that in mind," McDermott shared.

Another factor in play besides the health of each player is managing the 53-man roster. Once the Bills open a player's practice window, they have 21 days to either activate that player to the active roster or place them on season-ending IR.

"One thing affects another," McDermott said of the decision process. "Number one is them getting healthy enough to be back. Two is, what is the next move, the corresponding move after that."

Status of Oliver, Milano and Brown for Week 5

The Bills were without three key starters in the 31-19 over New Orleans: DT Ed Oliver, LB Matt Milano and RT Spencer Brown.

McDermott continued to say that all three are "heading in the right direction", as was his message at the end of last week.

"I'll know more as we get through Tuesday and then into Wednesday morning as to their status for this week," he said. "We'll probably have to take it one day at a time."

Oliver hasn't played since Week 1 due to an ankle injury, while Milano has been dealing with a pectoral injury that forced him to leave during the second half of Week 2. For Brown, he missed Sunday due to a calf injury but was able to practice in a limited capacity last Friday.
