Poyer out for Bills; Elston expected to start at safety

The Bills were already without starting cornerback E.J. Gaines for today's game. Buffalo's inactive list reveals that their secondary will be short another starter.

Safety Jordan Poyer is also on Buffalo's inactive list. Poyer was a game time decision coming into Sunday's game, but he was unable to practice all week after suffering a knee injury on the final play of the game last week.

Poyer sounded uncertain as to whether his knee would recover in time to be the player he needs to be on the field, especially a high-powered passing attack like the Raiders.

"We've got to be smart," he said Friday. "I don't want to put the team in any bad situations because I can't do this or that. I want to be out there with the guys, but if I'm not playing I'll be the biggest cheerleader on the sidelines and help the guys out."

Set to fill Poyer's role is first-year player Trae Elston. Today will be the first start of his NFL career. Known as a hard-hitting safety, Elston will undoubtedly be tested by Raiders TE Jared Cook, who runs well and is the team's third-leading receiver behind Amari Cooper and Michael Crabtree.

"I know this team has full confidence in Trae Elston if he has to go out there and play," said Poyer, who intends to help Elston between series on the sidelines. "He had a great week of practice."

Here is the full list of Bills inactives for today's game.
