Zay Jones sidelined, but day to dayIt wasn't completely unexpected, especially after watch the way his leg hyperextended awkwardly in the Thursday night game against the Jets. On Monday, Zay Jones was held out of practice, but head coach Sean McDermott made it sound like Jones' injury was not of the long-term variety.
"He's not going to practice (Monday), but he's day to day at this point," McDermott said. "It's just a day-to-day type of situation obviously with the knee. So we'll continue to progress. He's made some progress already and we're moving in the right direction."
* *Tight end Charles Clay was also held out of practice. Though he dressed for Monday's abbreviated session, he only did work on the side.
Cornerback E.J. Gaines was also supposed to be held out of practice, but he was participating in individual position drills as he works his way back from a hamstring injury.
"They're also listed as day to day," said McDermott. "Both are progressing as well and we're hopeful they can make it for this weekend."
Benjamin gets his first practice inBills new WR Kelvin Benjamin was participating in practice for the first time. The big receiver was being worked into the offense in quick order after weekend cram sessions with receivers coach Phil McGeoghan and the offensive playbook.
"He put in a lot of work over the last couple of days with our receivers coach, so we'll see how he's progressed in terms of his grasp of the offense at this point," said McDermott.
Benjamin is expected to play on Sunday against the Saints.
Cadet also getting acclimatedIn addition to Benjamin, there was another new player getting acclimated to his new teammates in Buffalo. RB Travaris Cadet, signed over the weekend, participated in his first practice as well on Monday.
Coach McDermott sees him wearing a bunch of hats here in Buffalo.
"Travaris' skill set is multi-dimensional," he said. "He can run the ball. He can catch the ball out of the backfield. He can line up as a wide receiver. He can do different things. He plays special teams. There's a multi-dimensional facet to his game."
Cadet is wearing jersey number 39.
