September 4, 1988 -- THOMAS IMPRESSIVE IN NFL DEBUT

Thurman Thomas rushed for 86 yards and a touchdown in his NFL debut, as the Bills beat the Vikings 13-10 at Rich Stadium for their first season-opening victory since 1982.

September 4, 1959 -- RALPH C. WILSON, JR. JOINS AFL OWNERS

Detroit businessman Ralph C. Wilson, Jr. expressed interest in owning an AFL franchise in Miami, Fla.

September 4, 1971 -- FIRST ROUND PICK HURT IN PRESEASON GAME

The Bills defeated the Detroit Lions, 31-17, as Dennis Shaw passed for 234 yards. No. 1 draft choice J.D. Hill suffered a knee injury. He underwent surgery a few days later and was not expected back until late in the season.

September 4, 1985 -- McGRODER JOINS WALL OF FAME

The Bills announced that Patrick McGroder would join O.J. Simpson and Jack Kemp on the Wall of Fame. The team also said rookies Andre Reed and Bruce Smith would start the season opener against San Diego, as would QB Vince Ferragamo.
