Terrence McGee, Bills cornerback and kick returner, made a special visit on Tuesday at the High School Player Development (HSPD) program at the Bills Fieldhouse in Orchard Park, NY. He showed his support of the program, provided tips and high-fives to the athletes and even assisted with some of the drills. In addition, former Bills offensive line coach Jim McNally helped coach the lineman on Tuesday.
The Buffalo Bills and the NFL are hosting the High School Player Development (HSPD) program each evening this week from 6:00 p.m. - 8:00 p.m. ending Friday, July 25th. The free football camp has 23 schools, including three from Canada, and over 160 student-athletes participating. Participating schools are listed below.
The camp provides participants with a curriculum that focuses on inspiring excellence in the classroom, community and on the field. Coaches volunteer their time and expertise to help these student-athletes with practical life lessons, preparation for standardized tests, and discussions on life after high school.
Erie Community College Head Football Coach Dennis Greene is running the practices with other volunteer coaches from six different schools, including the University of Buffalo. They motivate the kids, give guidance, teach skills and technique, and provide fun football drills. They are giving the athletes access to innovative teaching and drills developed by leading NCAA and NFL coaches.
The NFL's nationwide HSPD camp is open to incoming sophomores, juniors and seniors. Over 9,000 high school student-athletes in 17 cities nationally participate.
The student-athletes receive free jerseys, student planners, and physicals. Upon camp completion, each player is given a personalized portfolio, measuring their skill development by position and providing a complete breakdown of their techniques. The portfolio also notes any issues that need to be addressed to improve and advance to the next level.
