This week, the Buffalo Bills recognized two high school girls flag football coaches as the Coach of the Year.

Clarence High School's Mark Layer (Buffalo Region) and Webster Schroeder High School's Ian Insley (Rochester Region) were chosen for their achievements during the 2025 season. Layer coached the Clarence girls team to regionals and Insley coached the Webster Schroeder girls team to a Class B State Title.

The Bills surprised both coaches with these awards on a video call during the team's media day with LT Dion Dawkins and WR Khalil Shakir breaking the special news.

Bills players have been active supporters for girls flag football in the Western New York region over the last several seasons. In addition to the Coach of the Year surprise, the team invited the girls flag football teams from Webster Schroeder and Pioneer High School to attend a Bills minicamp practice to be recognized for their state championships.

"Your support that you've had for us means the world," Insley told Dawkins on the video call. "It makes them feel special and you guys doing this stuff goes a long way."

Insley has been the coach at Webster Schroeder for the last three seasons. He shared that his philosophy as a coach is to teach the girls to embrace the moment when they are out on the field. His favorite memory this season was winning the state championship.

"Watching the seniors end their high school career on such a positive note. They have all experienced so much in the last 4 years, and seeing them celebrate with their friends and family meant the world to me as a coach," he said.

For Layer, this is also his third season coaching at Clarence, compiling a 42-6 record during that time. Several players from his team represented the Buffalo Bills in the National Flag Football tournament in Canton, Ohio in 2024. The team has also qualified for the NYS Scholar Athlete program the last three years.

"My coaching philosophy is to make flag football a rewarding and enriching experience for all of our players while building positive relationships with young people. We are out there to have fun while fielding a highly competitive team representing Clarence High School and our community in the most positive way," Layer said.

Layer credits the team culture built by the girls over the last few seasons as one of the biggest reasons why he enjoys coaching at Clarence.

"I think the most rewarding part of this season to me was seeing the returning players and brand new players mesh together to form this year's team," he said. " We had great experience returning but also many first year players played a vital role in this year's success. The team came together quickly and players filled their roles perfectly. The culture of our team was outstanding and that's what was most rewarding to me."
