'Each and every week has got to be earned' | How the Bills are looking to bounce back with win over Atlanta Falcons

FTLR10.9

Buffalo takes on Atlanta on the road, its second away game of the season. Kickoff is set for 7:15 p.m. for the Monday Night Football game where the Bills seek a win following their first loss of the season.

The last time Buffalo and the Falcons met was Jan. 2, 2022, when the Bills won 29-15 at home. Both teams will wear throwback uniforms for Monday's game, which is the 14th time they meet in series history.

After the Week 5 loss, Buffalo has a chance to go 5-1 for the first time since 2022.

"I'm a big believer in the way you respond, if you're doing it right, sets you up for your next opportunity … sometimes it's confidence, sometimes it's encouragement." head coach Sean McDermott said. "But at the end of the day, it's all truth. Truthful in the way of making sure we're doing what we need to do to improve and grow and play at a higher level."

Injury Report

McDermott gave an injury update ahead of Monday night's game.

Linebacker Matt Milano (pectoral) and defensive tackle T.J. Sanders (knee) did not practice on Thursday. McDermott said Milano aggravated the same injury during Week 5's game.

McDermott said the team is not opening up the 21-day practice window for cornerback Maxwell Hairston, kicker Tyler Bass, and offensive tackle Tylan Grable.

Response after loss to New England in Week 5

The Bills did not play to their standard against the Patriots, something McDermott, offensive coordinator Joe Brady, and defensive coordinator Bobby Babich emphasized during the week.

Monday night is a new opportunity, and that started the day after Buffalo's first loss.

"You're getting a chance to communicate and do some listening … making sure we're all on the same page with what our standard is and how things are done and what you need to do in terms of what winning habits look like," McDermott said. "It's really about process as opposed to results at this point, it's about how we can make sure that we're all on the same page with those key areas and core values."

Developing an early, consistent rhythm on offense

Wide receiver Keon Coleman had an up-and-down night on Sunday. He made four of seven catches for 23 yards. His night started with a fumble that New England recovered at Buffalo's 11-yard-line. In the fourth quarter, Coleman bounced back from that mishap and scored, which put the Bills within three of the Patriots.

"I trust 0," Allen said. "[Coleman is] still continuing to develop that rapport. But for him, late in that game to score a touchdown, [make] a couple big plays for us – the third down jump ball – we're going to need more of that from him and [it's] not going to deter me from going his way at all."

At the end of the day for Buffalo, it's about coming together and doing what's best for the team.

"I'm a ball player and you can count on me to make plays when they need to be made," Coleman said.

In the run game, running back James Cook had 15 carries on Sunday, his lowest of the season. He rushed for 49 yards, averaging 3.3 yards per carry. In all four previous games, Cook scored at least once and in the last three games before the Patriots, he passed 100 rushing yards.

It was difficult for him to develop a rhythm and feel for the game without enough carries. Offensive rhythm is something Buffalo struggled with, and whether it's Cook or any other player out there, McDermott wants his team to overcome that hump as early as possible. In the first four games of the season, the Bills scored on each of their opening drives.

"At the end of the day, this is the NFL," Allen said. "Each and every week has got to be earned and that starts in practice."

Preparing for Atlanta's offense

While the Bills have an extra day to reflect and prepare for Atlanta, the Falcons had their bye week in Week 5 following a 34-27 win over the Commanders. It was the highest point total the Falcons have posted this season.

After losing the turnover battle against the Patriots in Week 5, Buffalo's defense seeks to flip that script. It starts with overcoming a young but rising quarterback Michael Penix Jr., and dual threat running back Bijan Robinson.

Penix Jr. has completed 78 of 125 pass attempts for 918 yards and three touchdowns this season. On the ground, he's posted 13 carries for 31 yards and one score over four games.

"[Penix Jr.] knows [the offense] like the back of his hand," McDermott said. "He's extremely detailed in how he runs their offense and certainly has a great running game to accompany the talents and skills that he brings to the table … I'll start there; his throwing ability is very impressive, very accurate. He seems to have a great feel for NFL defenses already, which is rare."

In the backfield, the Bills defense will aiming to stop Robinson who's used in both the pass and run game. He recorded 64 carries for 314 yards and one touchdown rushing alongside 18 catches for 270 yards and one receiving touchdown.

"Big time [dual threat]," McDermott said of Robinson. "He can do it in the run game, the pass game. He plays all downs, which is somewhat rare anymore, and we have a ton of respect for his game."
