Buffalo is buzzing — and quarterback Josh Allen feels it, even from 30,000 feet.
While he wasn't in the building, the Bills QB felt the excitement of the Sabres' thrilling Game 1 victory over the Boston Bruins on his Sunday night flight to Buffalo.
"Obviously the whole plane was going nuts. Got to watch the highlights right after. Talk about electric," he said. "Just for the city of Buffalo, I think it's a better place when the Sabres are playing well."
Allen returned to One Bills Drive as the team continues its voluntary workout phase of the offseason. He spoke in front of the media for the first time since January, highlighting new life changes that are fueling him, his thoughts on the state of the team and more.
Dad life is "very rewarding" for Allen as life perspectives change
Off the field, Allen is navigating one of the biggest transitions of his life: becoming a father.
Sleep may be scarce but perspective is not.
"I think it definitely changes the mindset a little bit. I am very excited. I do think this is going to be the best version of myself in all aspects in my professional career and my personal life," Allen said. "It's such a blessing, and I've got an absolute rock star of a wife that's doing so many things right now and allowing me to be here right now and be with my teammates."
Though perspectives on life have shifted, Allen's internal spark to be the best he can be remains as alive as ever.
"That 'want to win' will never change. The 'why I want to do it' has. So why I want to do it and to show my family, to show my daughter how hard you need to work in order to accomplish something so great. And as long as I play this game, that's going to be my mindset," he said.
Some brief time away from the game to heal from offseason surgery and focus on being a dad has refreshed Allen, who will turn 30 at the end of May.
"Hopefully the dad strength kicks in, right? Is that what they say?" Allen laughed. "I think just getting back to playing this game the way I love to play it, having fun enjoying my teammates enjoying this game."
Inside Josh Allen's foot surgery and recovery
The Bills quarterback underwent offseason foot surgery that was a result of an injury suffered against the Cleveland Browns in Week 16. Allen shared that he has progressed through his rehab and is participating in OTAs with no restrictions.
"It feels really good right now. I don't feel like I have any limitations," he said.
Allen went on to detail the surgery process, describing how the surgeon removed a small piece of bone that broke.
"A little piece of bone just kind of broke off and was floating there so they just went in, took it out, kind of like a small rock. They literally just cut it out, left it on the table and sewed it back up, and scar tissue will form around it," Allen said.
The QB also learned a new detail about himself — he previously had a break or fracture in his foot from earlier in his life.
"When we looked at it after that Cleveland game, it was like this wasn't a fresh break," he said. "At some point, whether it was five, 10, maybe even 15 years ago something had happened, and it just kind of calloused over and basically had set so it wasn't painful until I put weight on it, put a lot of weight on it. It just kind of jarred loose and kind of broke up all the scar tissue in there."
Now moving around and participating in team activities without restrictions, Allen embraces the offseason labor going into his ninth year of his NFL career.
"Continuing to love the grind, love going out there and practicing, love trying to get better. The results will come with that, just going out there and playing football," he said.
Josh Allen is helping Joe Brady set the tone
With a new head coach in place, Allen has made it a priority to be present during offseason workouts, helping establish the culture for a reshaped locker room.
While Allen is no stranger to working with head coach Joe Brady, there are many players, both new and returning, that are starting to develop a deeper connection with their head coach.
"Just wanted to make sure that my presence is felt here, and trying to relay what Joe has in store for us, and make sure that I can be the best version of myself and be the best leader for this team that I can be," he said.
Allen has taken note of the "new message, new vibe" around the building with Brady at the helm, while noticing the synergy that's brought so much success in recent years has remained.
"Still respecting the past and what's been here the last 10 years and not shying away from that, but also having his own twist on it," Allen added. "It's been really good to see him embrace the role and step into it. The way that he talks to the guys, you can tell he's very well respected with everybody in that locker room, and it's only going to continue to grow in my opinion."
There's also a new mantra and mindset that Brady is instilling in the team.
"The main message we're receiving is 'Put the ball down.' Doesn't matter where, doesn't matter when, we're gonna have the competitive stamina to go four quarters or more with anybody. That's our mindset going into it," Allen said.
Brady added during his media availability that it's about not letting what happened the previous play or earlier in the game affect you in the moments. It's about locking in on the here and now.
"It's got to be a lifestyle," Brady said. "We're not going to look at the scoreboard … I want us to not care about the time of the day, the weather outside, who we're playing, any of that stuff, like what just happened the previous play. Just put the ball down again, and we'll keep it moving."
Building chemistry with a new target
When Allen returned to Buffalo for the start of OTAs, he made the astute observation that one of his locker mates was different than year's past. Newly acquired wide receiver DJ Moore now occupies a locker space next to the Bills franchise QB, making it easy for the two to get acquainted, or re-aquainted as Allen put it.
"We were in the same draft class. We spent a little bit of time together actually at the rookie premiere way back in the day … he's a team-first guy. He's obviously very, very talented," he said.
Allen described how quick the two have been able to develop off-the-field chemistry.
"He's got kids, I've got a kid now, and it's like very easy conversations to have to continue to grow that relationship and build trust on the field," Allen added.
A Game 2 appearance?
In Josh Allen's team bio, attending a Sabres Stanley Cup Final game is listed as his dream sporting event.
While it's only the first round, Allen could inch closer to his dream event by attending a Stanley Cup Playoff game this week. The QB smiled but didn't make any promises when asked if he's going to Game 2 as the Sabres host the Bruins Tuesday night.
"I'm hoping to … planning on it," he smirked.
