It took a blocked field goal, a game-winning kick and several clutch plays from Josh Allen, but the Bills found a way to earn a 37-34 overtime win over the Rams on Monday Night Football.
Here are three key takeaways from Buffalo's victory in Los Angeles.
1 — Bills win first OT game in Josh Allen era
Buffalo's latest victory served as a reminder of how quickly games can change in the NFL.
Monday night's roller-coaster matchup between the Bills and Rams featured momentum swings, missed opportunities and game-changing plays before Buffalo emerged with a 37-34 overtime victory.
"You can be down and out one play, the next play you're on top of the world," said Bills QB Josh Allen.
The second half swung back and forth in a shootout fashion as Buffalo and L.A. traded blows, hoping to land a knockout punch. Instead, the final six drives of regulation all ended in touchdowns (three for each team), setting up for an overtime clash.
The Rams appeared poised to win the game in OT when they lined up for a 48-yard field goal. Instead, OLB Greg Rousseau powered through the protection and got a hand on the kick, keeping it short of the uprights and giving Buffalo one final possession.
The Bills capitalized on the second chance, driving into field-goal range before Tyler Bass drilled a 45-yard game-winner.
"I was just super present. Whenever coach Brady says, 'Hey, it's time.' It's time… It doesn't matter, first down or fourth down, I just go out there, do my process and go from there," he said.
For Buffalo, it's the team's first overtime win since drafting QB Josh Allen. The Bills entered Monday winless in their last seven overtime appearances, with their last two ending in game-winning field goals by their opponent (DEN, PHI).
"Find a way," head coach Joe Brady said. "I don't care about anything besides finding a way to get one more point than them. And I'm just proud of the resiliency of the guys. And look, we watch situations across the NFL every week, and until that clock hits zero, I just keep playing, just keep putting the ball down. And that overtime kind of showed the type of character who our team is."
Rousseau's block of Rams kicker Harrison Mevis was the outside linebacker's second field goal block in as many seasons. He blocked a FG attempt against the Falcons in Week 6 last season, also on Monday Night Football.
With 24 points in the second half and overtime, the Bills have now scored 30+ points in six straight road games against the Rams, tying the NFL record for most consecutive road games with 30+ points by one team against a single opponent.
It's also the fourth time in Bills history that they have scored 34+ points in each of their first two road games of a season (also 1964, 1992, 2021).
In the fourth quarter and overtime, Allen was 5 for 5 passing with 112 yards through the air, adding 91 rushing yards and rushing TD.
"We have a two-game stint on the west coast. Our goal is to go 1-0 each week and we want to go 2-0 this west coast trip — but you can't go 2-0 without getting the first one. So we did the first part of our job," Allen said.
2 — Josh Allen's second-half surge fuels Buffalo's comeback effort
While the game ultimately came down to a blocked field goal and Tyler Bass' game-winning kick, Buffalo's offense played a major role in putting the Bills in position to win.
After halftime, Josh Allen and the Bills repeatedly answered Rams scoring drives in a back-and-forth affair. The unit totaled 308 yards of offense in the second half and overtime, tied for the most in a game since Allen entered the league in 2018. Buffalo also produced 10 explosive plays during that stretch, its highest total in the Allen era.
Allen shared after the game that he was battling some issues with his throwing mechanics in the first half and felt the ball wasn't coming out of his hand the way he wanted.
"That second half I just said, you know what? Turn off the mind and throw the dang ball. And that's kind of what I did and felt pretty good. I don't know the splits from first half to second half, but I felt like we got into a rhythm there in the second," Allen said.
The adjustment paid dividends as Buffalo consistently moved the ball after halftime, but when the game demanded a playmaker, Allen repeatedly delivered with his legs. 100 of Allen's 121 rushing yards came in the second half and overtime, the most he has recorded during that span of a game since his rookie season in 2018.
"When it's there, it's there," Allen said of the open running lanes. "I don't want to make a living in that, I understand that. But I do know how much of a back-breaker that can be on the defense when you feel like you're in pretty good coverage."
Even more impressive, six of his seven rush attempts during that stretch resulted in a first down, and he averaged 14.3 yards per carry. His two biggest runs came in overtime. After Greg Rousseau's blocked field goal gave Buffalo another possession, Allen ripped off back-to-back scrambles of 19 and 13 yards to move the Bills to the Rams' 27-yard line and set up Bass' game-winning kick.
"It's tough for [the Rams] to play all the way through the down with [Allen's] legs," Joe Brady said. "And I hope his legs aren't the answers always. It's why we got to do a better job in the past game and from a play design to just an execution to just the protection and everything. But look, when the ball was in his hands, he made plays when we needed him to at the end."
For the game, Allen rushed for 107 yards on scrambles, the most by any player this season and third-most in a game, according to Next Gen Stats. He also became the first player in NFL history to record 200-plus passing yards on 20 or fewer pass attempts and 100-plus rushing yards on 10 or fewer carries in the same game.
Allen wasn't the only contributor on the ground. James Cook generated 111 of the team's 234 rushing yards, including three runs of at least 15 yards. The balanced attack helped the Bills stay ahead of the chains and maintain offensive momentum throughout the second half and overtime.
3 — Two trends that flipped in Buffalo's favor
Entering Monday night's matchup, two areas had either been challenges for the Bills or strengths for their opponent. Against the Rams, those trends were turned on their head and played a key role in Buffalo's overtime victory.
Since the start of 2024, the Rams, Bills and Ravens are the only three NFL teams with a rushing success rate of over 50%.
While L.A. ranks 20th in explosive runs (12+ yards) during that span, they are 1st in success rate (53.5%) on first and second downs, meaning they run the ball effectively on early downs to set up favorable third downs. Case in point, the Rams have faced 3rd and 6 or longer the fewest times among all NFL teams since 2024 (5.5 snaps per game).
Against the Bills, the Rams posted a rushing success rate of 34.8%, their lowest mark of the season.
Buffalo held the Rams' duo of Kyren Williams and Blake Corum to 78 yards on 21 combined carries, an average of 3.7 yards per rush attempt. Just one rush attempt by the Rams went for more than 10 yards.
On early downs, L.A. had a rushing success rate of 35% compared to 43% by Buffalo's offense and netted just one explosive run. The Bills had seven explosive runs on early downs. The Rams ran the ball on just 2 of 14 third down plays, and both were stopped for no gain.
Another trend that flipped was Buffalo's second down offensive performance. The Bills came into Monday as an elite offense on every down except for second downs.
Buffalo entered Week 5 leading the NFL in yards per play on first, third and fourth down, but ranked 25th on second down at 4.4 yards per play. That changed against the Rams, as more than half of the team's 436 total yards came on second-down plays.
Buffalo averaged 11.4 yards per play on second down, the highest mark of any NFL team in Week 5, and gained a first down on 13 second-down plays, its highest total in a game this season.
The Bills also found the end zone twice on second down: Allen's 7-yard touchdown pass to Keon Coleman late in the third quarter and James Cook's go-ahead 5-yard touchdown run with less than two minutes remaining in regulation.
By limiting one of the NFL's most efficient rushing attacks and finally finding answers on second down, the Bills flipped two important trends in their favor Monday night.
