5 players to watch in Bills vs. Panthers | Preseason Week 1 2026

The preseason has arrived, and with it comes hard core evaluation of the players by the Bills coaching staff. Here's a handful of players to keep an eye on to see if they can improve their standing on the roster.

Buffalo Bills Training Camp, August 01, 2026 at St. John Fisher University.

1 – OT Jude Bowry

One of Buffalo's fourth-round picks, Bowry is in a battle for the team's swing tackle job behind starters Spencer Brown and Dion Dawkins. The rookie has unassailable physical gifts and is twitchy for a 314-pound offensive lineman. How he communicates with his left guard to switch on blocking assignments in pass protection and his ability to reset the line of scrimmage in the run game will be closely watched.

2 – DL DeWayne Carter

The third-year defensive lineman is eager to restart his career after losing his entire 2025 season to a ruptured Achilles last August. Carter told me he's added 18 pounds of lean muscle mass to his frame. That has shown up in his ability to hold up in the run front and work off blocks to get to the ball. Where he lines up in the preseason opener will be of interest as the defensive staff tries to nail down whether he can be a rotational nose tackle, defensive tackle, or both.

3 – ILB Kaleb Elarms-Orr

The last of Buffalo's three fourth-round selections, Elarms-Orr has been the talk of camp on the defensive side of the ball. Getting a healthy number of snaps alongside Terrel Bernard at both inside linebacker positions, the TCU product has looked the part. If his preseason proves as solid as his training camp performance, he could land a starting role come September.

4 – WR Joshua Palmer

Injury riddled for much of his first season in Buffalo, Palmer is finally healthy. His game as a reliable intermediate and deep threat has surfaced regularly in camp. It has put him in good position to have a top three role in the receiving corps. But Palmer will need to carry that encouraging play in practice into the preseason to hold off any potential challengers.

5 – RB Ian Wheeler

The United Bowl MVP has an uphill climb on an established running back depth chart. But he has a solid frame (5-foot-10, 205 pounds) and clocked a 4.41 40-time at his pro day back in 2024. His burst and explosion flashed at times in training camp and the Blue & Red practice last weekend. If he can prove dependable with his decision making, ball security, and demonstrate his versatility, he could challenge Frank Gore Jr. for the practice squad role he has held the last two seasons.
