'A hard team to game plan for' | Bills prepare for the New England Patriots after uneven Week 3 outing

The Bills got back to work ahead of their first Divisional matchup with the New England Patriots in Week 4. After scraping together a 24-16 victory last Sunday against the Los Angeles Chargers, Buffalo looks to stay in the win column this weekend.

Here's what came from the first day back at practice.

Moving past the struggles in Week 3

Turning the ball over five times and still pulling out a victory is no easy task in the NFL. The Bills defense came through in a big way to pick up the slack and come away with the victory, with the offensive side of the ball hoping to get back on track.

"Yeah, I mean there were a lot of things to learn from, and thankfully we still came out with a win, but we can't let the result confuse our process," TE Dawson Knox said. "Just because we won, we can't brush aside some of those mistakes. I think it's very, very important to learn from some of those things, specifically taking care of the football, staying on track, winning first down.

"It was a great learning experience and something that will make us better in the long run."

Despite the struggles on the way to the win, Buffalo never showed any quit last Sunday. The defense allowed just 10 points off turnovers in Week 3, with the offense making plays in the fourth quarter to complete a double-digit comeback.

Coming away victorious helped the team's confidence in how they'll handle inevitable bumps in the road throughout the rest of the long season.

"Everybody needs games like that just to see — I'm not saying you want to do that, but if it happens and you face that adversity early on in the game and throughout the game, you want to see how the team responds to it," WR Khalil Shakir said. "I think we did a great job just pulling out a win."

Head coach Joe Brady has loved how his quarterback has handled the less-than-perfect showing against the Chargers. Josh Allen led multiple scoring drives in the fourth quarter after his rough start to the day, building off that positive momentum into this week.

"He embodies competitive stamina, and I mean, not even talking about how he responds to a game like that. Just think about the response in the game, and just continuing to keep going," Brady said.

"And the fact that we can win that game with all of those circumstances just kind of shows that his mentality, his personality in terms of like, 'I'm going to still find a way,' and understanding that we have to find ways to get better, and that this week is just an opportunity for us to respond," Brady added.

Preparing for the Pats

The Week 4 matchup with the Patriots brings other intriguing factors outside of the obvious added edge to a divisional battle. New England is also entering the game coming off a 35-6 road loss to Jacksonville.

Buffalo isn't focused on the Patriots' 1-2 record, treating the game as they would any other week. New England returned a large core of last year's squad that made it to the Super Bowl, and despite the early season woes, has shown plenty of traits of the same skilled roster.

"I honestly think this is one of the more well-rounded defenses that we've faced and that we're going to face throughout the whole year," Shakir said. "They play really well together. You can tell their team chemistry and their bond; they play for one another, which is obviously seen on film. That's obviously what you want in a team."

To begin the year, the Patriots have shown an aggressive defensive mentality, aiming to disrupt opposing quarterbacks with pressure. New England has blitzed opponents on 45.2% of dropbacks through Week 3, the fourth-highest rate in the league.

"They're a very well-coached team," Allen said. "Defensively, they've got a lot of studs over there. They make life extremely hard for you, especially running the ball. Give a lot of different blitz looks on your passing downs, especially on third down, third and medium, third and long."

Brady was vocal that the Patriots' 35-6 loss last week isn't indicative of the team he's seen on film. He's preparing for a big challenge in Week 4, staying true to the same mindset he had against a 0-2 Los Angeles squad that led for most of the day last Sunday.

"It's a hard team to game plan for, and they do a great job of understanding who they are, their tendencies, switching it up, and that you're playing a game, both the players and the coaches, the entire game," Brady said. "They do a tremendous job, and it's obviously gonna be a tough matchup for us."
