The Bills have hired Pete Carmichael to be Buffalo's next offensive coordinator, marking the first official hire of Joe Brady's head coach tenure with the Bills. Brady and Carmichael overlapped on the offensive coaching staff for two seasons in New Orleans (2017-18).

Carmichael comes to the Bills with an extensive amount of NFL coaching experience. Buffalo's new OC started coaching in the NFL in 2000 and worked for five different teams over the last 25 years.

His last stop was with the Denver Broncos where he served as the senior offensive assistant from 2024-25. Carmichael had a big hand in the early development of quarterback Bo Nix, who was drafted in 2024. The Broncos posted a 10-7 season in 2024 and 14-3 record in 2025, making playoff appearances both years.

Before that, Carmichael had a long 17-year stint (2006-23) with the New Orleans Saints as part of Sean Payton's coaching staff. Carmichael started as the Saints' quarterbacks coach, then added passing game coordinator to his title and elevated to offensive coordinator in 2009.

He oversaw an offense that had a ton of success in New Orleans, including a Super Bowl from the 2009 season. Carmichael's quarterback Drew Brees earned Super Bowl MVP that season and was also a two-time NFL Offensive Player of the Year (2008, 2011) under his guise.

During his introductory press conference Thursday, Brady shared his vision for the coaching staff, highlighting the importance of finding an offensive coordinator who can teach the offense. While the pair may have a shared offensive philosophy under the Payton tree, their personalities are quite different, Brady explained on One Bills Live Friday.

"Pete is a guy I've always looked up to because he doesn't get a lot of credit for the success they had in New Orleans. Pete was an integral piece," Brady said.

Brady believes Carmichael "understands" the head coach's vision for the offense. During his time with the Saints, Payton was the primary play caller, like Brady will be in Buffalo, and Carmichael helped install and game plan.

"I can trust when I'm not in there, that the room is going to keep moving along," Brady said. "He's as brilliant as they come and I'm so excited I get to work with him again."

When Carmichael was NO's OC, the Saints offense was the best of the best averaging 385.3 total yards per game (1st), 271.5 passing yards per game (1st) and 27.1 points per game (1st). He also helped produce 10 AP All-Pros and 18 Pro Bowlers over that span.

Brees produced some of his finest games with Carmichael as his OC. The QB had the most offensive touchdowns (423), averaged the most passing yards per game (300.6) and had the highest completion percentage (69.7%) from 2009-20.

Prior to his time with the Saints, Carmichael was with the San Diego Chargers from 2002-05 in various offensive roles (offensive assistant, assistant wide receivers, quality control). He also worked with Washington in 2001 (offensive assistant and quality control) and Cleveland in 2000 (tight ends and offensive assistant).

Before breaking into the NFL, Carmichael served as the quarterbacks coach for Louisiana Tech (1995-99) and the assistant offensive line coach at New Hampshire (1994). He is from Medway, Mass. and attended Boston College.
