Here's the Bills news of note for Sept. 23rd.
1 - Von Miller aware of weapons on Bills offense
Despite the Bills offensive struggles in Week Two, Denver Broncos All-Pro linebacker, Von Miller, knows it's a dangerous group when they're clicking.
"They still have playmakers all over the field. You have LeSean McCoy, all he needs is a little break and he can take it the distance… they have a lot of weapons over there. Plus they have one of the stoutest front seven in the National Football League," Miller Said.
LeSean McCoy had a down week last Sunday against the Carolina Panthers, but he's known to bounce back well after poor performances. The biggest concern outside of the locker room seems to be at the quarterback position and the wide receivers' inability to get open. Miller and Tyrod Taylor have been Pro Bowl selections the past two seasons, the Broncos pass rusher knows what Taylor is capable of.
2- Poyer once again named to Team of the Week
Jordan Poyer has been flawless this season. In his debut game with the Buffalo Bills he made a great first impression and then backed it up in Week Two against the Carolina Panthers. Poyer's dominance has earned him praise throughout the league.
For the second straight week Poyer made the defensive Team of the Week, according to Pro Football Focus. Against Carolina, hehad a team-high 11 tackles and also added a sack. With a sack in both games this year, he's the first defensive back in franchise history to record a sack in both of the first two games of his Bills career.
"I wouldn't say I'm surprised, we work hard. Our secondary works hard each and every day, each and every week. We watch film together, we understand what each other are thinking and we practice hard too, so I wouldn't say I'm surprised," Poyer said. Bills safety Jordan Poyer is the highest graded safety in the NFL through two weeks. He's graded with a 92.4, topping: Harrison Smith (90.5), Lamarcus Joyner (89.8), and Landon Collins (88.6). Expectations for Poyer and his new supporting cast is what motivates the fifth-year veteran.
"We all just jell with each other. We all understand what the outside world expects out of our group. I think we take that personally, I think each day we come in here and we have that approach that we want to be the best," Poyer said. "We all went over to Micah's house the other day and just kind of hung out, watched some Monday Night games. Stuff like that carries over to the football field when it comes to crunch time and you look your teammate in the eye. You know he's fighting for you and you've got to fight for him. It's very positive in that sense."
Poyer and the newly faced secondary will look to avoid any touchdowns through the air this Sunday, something they haven't allowed through the first two weeks.
3 - Bills defense prone to shutting down big plays
The Buffalo Bills are one of the top defenses in the NFL, one thing to credit is their ability to prevent big plays. It's been quite a while since the Bills allowed either a 300-yard passer or a 100-yard receiver in a game. Their streak stretches well into last season.
The Bills are tied for the NFL's third-longest streak of not allowing a 300-yard passer at 10 games. The team's more than familiar with the last man to abuse the secondary; it was Tom Brady, going for 315 yards and four touchdowns. He did so on Oct. 30, 2016, in Orchard Park.
Another notable feat is the Bills have the third-longest streak of not allowing a 100-yard receiver at nine games. The last receiver to hit triple digits was the tight end for the Seattle Seahawks, Jimmy Graham. That stretches back to Nov. 7, 2016.
The Bills will look for these streaks to continue against a prolific Denver Broncos offense this Sunday. The Broncos are hot in September, they're 10-1 in the month since 2014 and that's the best record in the NFL in that time span.
