Game Recap

Holding a 26-21 lead with under five minutes left to play, the Bills defense needed a stop. The Patriots swiftly moved the ball down the field without much trouble, finally reaching a third down at the 23-yard line.

New England QB Drake Maye rolled to his right, launching a pass deep to the end zone. WR Eftonn Chism III made an acrobatic one-handed catch to haul in the touchdown, giving his team the lead.

Buffalo got the ball back with under two minutes on the clock, but an interception gave the Patriots the chance to run the rest of the clock out.

Sunday was the second game in a row that the Bills offense struggled to return to the same dynamic group it was in the first two weeks. Buffalo punted the ball four times, with the timely plays not going its way throughout all four quarters.

The team punted on the only two drives in the third quarter, finally stringing together a solid drive to begin the fourth while facing a 21-17 deficit.

WR Keon Coleman was called upon on a third-and-six from just outside of field goal range. QB Josh Allen tossed a jump ball his way down the left sideline, with Coleman tipping it up into the air before diving and making a spectacular catch for a 22-yard gain. The big-time grab eventually led to a 38-yard field goal by Bass.

Coleman's big fourth quarter wasn't done there. On the ensuing drive, he converted another third down on a drag heading left, picking up 24 yards. The next play also went his way, with Allen launching a missile deep over the middle to his receiver in the end zone for a 34-yard touchdown, taking the 26-21 lead.

Despite the loss, Coleman had a solid day for himself, tallying 116 yards on six receptions with the touchdown.

Allen started slow in the first quarter as well, finally getting something going near the end of the first half. His biggest play of the day came on a 50-yard completion to WR Khalil Shakir prior to the two-minute warning.

Down at the six-yard line, the Bills committed a penalty on the first play under two minutes. One play later, holding and unsportsmanlike conduct penalties were called on the Patriots on a third-and-goal from the 16-yard line to extend the drive.

Buffalo eventually got down to the two-yard line, with Allen barreling in on a quarterback sneak to tie things at 14-14. The touchdown was Allen's 88th from scrimmage in his career, breaking the record for most in team history, surpassing Andre Reed and Thurman Thomas.

The Bills fumbled while attempting to put up more points with under 20 seconds left in the first half. CB Dee Alford brought in an interception on the very next play after the turnover, allowing K Tyler Bass to come out and knock down a 27-yard field goal to give Buffalo a 17-14 lead at the break.

The Bills offense rebounded after a quick three-and-out to begin the day on Sunday. The team's ensuing drive began at their own 38-yard line. It took a conversion on fourth down and two and a pair of third-down conversions, but they got down to the eight-yard line for a first and goal.

RB James Cook III took a counter handoff running to the right side from the eight, using his speed to get around the outside. The 27-year-old leapt toward the goal line from five yards out, outstretching the ball across the plane for a touchdown.

Cook had a solid showing with 75 yards and a touchdown in the loss, but with his team being behind for a large chunk of the game, he only carried the ball 12 times.

2026 second-round pick OLB TJ Parker earned the first half sack of his career with just over 10 minutes to play in the second quarter. Buffalo's first selection of this past year's draft saw a big role on Sunday, coming through for his team in a big way on the defense's second drive of the game.

The outside linebacker used his strength off the right edge to collapse the pocket, driving Patriots T Will Campbell into QB Drake Maye's back for the sack. DL Ed Oliver was credited with the other half, powering up the middle to get home.

Parker's pressure caused the quarterback's arm to be hit on the play, popping the ball out in the process. DL Greg Gaines was there to pounce on the fumble for Buffalo.

Buffalo nearly had back-to-back fumble recoveries in as many plays, with OLB Greg Rousseau flying around the left edge untouched to begin the next drive. The NFL's sack leader entering the game got to Maye as he brought his arm forward to pass, with the initial fumble recovery for a touchdown being reviewed and called incomplete.

The Patriots put together two plays for over 25 yards to get them down to the one-yard line after the incompletion. RB Rhamondre Stevenson took the handoff at the one up the middle, crossing the goal line for his team's second touchdown of the day.

Outside of the pair of turnovers, New England shook off the rust from its 35-6 loss to the Jacksonville Jaguars the week prior. It started early on, as after forcing a three-and-out on the opening drive, the Patriots got the ball backed up at their own three-yard line.

Maye led his squad down the field in a hurry. New England's offense had five plays of 12 or more yards on their inaugural drive, finally being slowed down at the Buffalo 29-yard line.

Maye converted a fourth-and-three with ease to WR Romeo Doubs at that spot, finding him on the following play as well for a 14-yard touchdown on a post up the left seam to take an early 7-0 lead.

New England wasted little time taking the lead back as the second half got underway. The Patriots drove 73 yards down to score after halftime, with a Bills sack on third and goal being nullified due to a holding penalty.

Doubs caught his second touchdown of the day two plays later on a three-yard goal-line fade to take a 21-17 lead.

After their first loss of the season, the Bills will look to get back on track in Week 5. Buffalo hits the road to take on the Los Angeles Rams on Monday, Oct. 12 at 8:15 p.m. EST.
