Last weekend's Return of the Blue & Red practice marked the first time Bills Mafia took over the newly-opened Highmark Stadium, and with the 60,108-capacity stadium nearly full, the night did more than meet expectations.

Despite the event just serving as another training camp practice at a new venue, the fans came loud and proud, giving a taste of what things will look like when games start to matter.

"I think it speaks to the excitement and the passion that the fans have in the area," season ticket member Jake Schoelles said. "This is something that doesn't count on the schedule, and everyone's still so willing to show up. The way that everyone's excited, it's just indicative of what this season is going to be in terms of how electric the stadium is going to feel. So that gets us excited, and as season ticket members, it says this is the best investment we've made in a while."

For both players and coaches, the support from the community that night was a continuation of what they've come to expect, but seeing it in the new digs helped to get them ready for the first season across Abbott Road.

Some players hadn't experienced the fans to their full effect, with Saturday finally turning the stories into a reality.

"I loved the atmosphere of it, the blue and red ombre on the seats, and then when we allowed the fans in, it was even more dope," outside linebacker Bradley Chubb said. "The Bills Mafia is a great fanbase and community, and I'm excited to be here."

One of the loudest moments of the night came when the screens in Highmark Stadium flashed to Josh Allen smiling at the camera. The crowd erupted at the sight of their quarterback, putting the new canopy's ability to trap noise on full display.

"This is Bills Mafia, man," Bills fan Jeff Robinson said. "We all know how loud this city can be for all the sports teams, let alone for the Bills with Josh Allen running out on the field. It's going to be insane."

The positive vibes were on full display all throughout the night, with big smiles on fans faces as they entered the building for the first time. Western New York's largest construction project finally got a chance to be seen up close, including all the intricacies that make it special.

"I have just noticed the attention to detail and everything in the stadium," season ticket member Devan Schoelles said. "Just looking around, you can just tell how much work was put into this. We're so excited to call this place a new home… It exceeded expectations. We knew it was going to be awesome given the amount of time and money spent on this, but I was just blown away in every aspect."

Even after seeing pictures and videos throughout the offseason detailing what the stadium would be like, being in the building physically proved to be a breathtaking experience for the community.

"It was absolutely stunning when we walked in," Jake Schoelles said. "We went to the game at Tottenham in London, and we've heard from everyone that it's the same architect, but when you walk in, it's amazing. Seeing this in Buffalo is like no other experience that I've had to date in terms of sporting events."

It's hard to not feel the buzz in Western New York ahead of the season, with so much new opportunity surrounding the Buffalo Bills as the home opener continues to grow closer.

"It's a great way to start the season for these fans that love the team so much, a great thing for the community," Bills fan Aidan Pacatte said. "Everybody's experiencing something for the first time. It's like unlimited energy."

For the players, being in that new environment marked the start of a new chapter of football in Buffalo, ready to get the season under way.

"It seems like the crowd's more on top of you, and I imagine on third down, it'll be rocking," offensive tackle Spencer Brown said. "… I think the fans really enjoy the upgrade."

"They started a 'Hey-Ey-Ey-Ey' chant, and I was surprised how loud it got for it," Chubb said. "Not even a preseason game, it's just a regular practice, and they showed out for sure."

Head coach Joe Brady chose to have the practice at 7 p.m. to help better replicate a game, with Bills Mafia easily surpassing his expectations.

"It was 50,000 for a practice," head coach Joe Brady said. "That's special. That's Buffalo."

"It's like another preseason game for the guys being in front of the fans," Brady added. "… Just to see the fans outside, driving around, it gives you that itch. It's real football in there."

Despite the building being brand new, fans have appreciated how much the stadium still feels like it's meant for the Bills.

"It's very suited for how Buffalo fans are," Jake Schoelles said. "We want to gather. We want to celebrate together… Here we get to gather the way that we're meant to be as fans, and that's so exciting for us. You look up and you see areas to gather all across around the stadium."

One of the biggest selling points has been the concourse, specifically the ability to see the field no matter where you are while walking around looking for food, drinks, merch or bathrooms.

"I like how bright it is. I like how airy it is. You feel like you can go get a beer and get a hot dog and turn around and you can still see the green in the field," Robinson said.

Saturday was just the first night of memories at a building that is sure to host tons as the years go by, and after the first debut, it's easy to see that Bills Mafia will be right at home.

"We're building a family, and when we think about when we're going to be able to bring our kids here, and the experiences that we're going to have with them, it just brings us excitement," Schoelles said.
