Top 3 things to know from Day 6 of Bills Training Camp | 2025

Top3Day6

Tuesday featured Buffalo's sixth practice of training camp and second in full pads. The Rochester heat was cranked up and the players turned the competition up a notch with several missing practice due to injury.

Here are the top three things to know from Tuesday's practice.

1. 'He wants to know the why' – How Joshua Palmer is getting comfortable with Buffalo's offense

New wide receiver Joshua Palmer is spending training camp finding ways to get comfortable in Buffalo's offense and with his new teammates. Tuesday's practice marked Palmer's second fully padded session as a Bill, so he's focusing on the details.

"After every play, I'm going to him (Josh Allen), and I'm saying, 'Is that where you wanted me to be?,'" Palmer said of working on chemistry with his QB. "And (I'm) asking for feedback, especially after practice, asking him what routes he wants to run. Where does he see me coming out of this break? Just a lot of reps and doing it over and over."

"The first day we did one-on-ones, him and Josh worked the exact same throw three straight times," offensive coordinator Joe Brady said. "First two were incomplete and I told them don't change the route. The route was perfect. And so, we can't get caught up in the results with it…it's us sorting through it and a lot of fun to work with."

It might sound simple, but there is an art to a wide receiver getting on the same page with the quarterback. Brady thinks Palmer is one of the most intellectual players on his side of the ball, which is helping him understand the offense.

"He wants to know the why," Brady said. "He wants to know, 'Hey how did that feel, what did that look like?' It's been a lot of fun with it because some wide receivers are just like, 'Hey, I'm going to run that line on paper.' But he wants to know, 'Hey did I fool with the quarterback? What about my body language?'"

While the intricacies of the game are super important and can set you apart from the competition, Palmer said he sometimes needs to remind himself to just go out there and play.

"I've really just been trying to emphasize just playing, just run hard and run fast," Palmer shared. "Get out the break, catch the ball, and we'll watch the film. And if it needs to be fixed, then we'll fix it. But I win more reps when I'm not thinking, so that's just what I'm going to continue to do."

The WR averaged 53 receptions and 670 receiving yards per season during his four years with the Chargers. His best season came in 2022 when he totaled 72 receptions, 769 receiving yards and three touchdowns.

In terms of fitting in with Buffalo's system, Palmer explained he's already seeing how 'Everybody Eats' plays out in practices.

"Some guys go off in practice and another guy will go off in a different practice, another guy will go off in a different practice," Palmer said. "…You really don't know how your route is going to affect the play. You don't really know if you're even going to get the ball…With this offense, you just have to be ready at all times, especially with Josh because he'll throw it to anybody."

2. Defense grabs a few interceptions + offense links up on two huge plays

With several players out due to injuries, Tuesday's practice was about those stepping up in their teammates' absences. The Bills started with one-on-ones before breaking into team periods.

During one-on-ones, cornerback Tre'Davious White popped early. White was lined up against a wide receiver and did a great job providing tight coverage. The cornerback boxed the wide receiver out and found a way to get his hands on the football for an interception in the end zone. On the next play, Josh Allen threw a nice ball to Keon Coleman in the corner of the end zone. Coleman didn't have much room because of the defender's coverage but he managed to catch the ball for a touchdown just before going out of bounds. Defensive players who came up with pass breakups during that period were cornerbacks Taron Johnson, Dorian Strong and Dane Jackson.

During the team periods, the defense flexed at the beginning. Linebacker Matt Milano dropped into coverage on a play and was in the perfect position for an interception. It wasn't the only interception during team drills. Cornerback Daequan Hardy was near a ball that was close to going incomplete and hitting the ground, Hardy dove to secure the ball and grab an interception.

White and Johnson also flashed during the team period. On separate plays, the two found themselves near the sideline and forced big-time pass breakups on what would have been decent gains for the offense. White and Johnson positioned themselves perfectly as they tracked the football and got their hands out in time to knock the ball away.

The offense had two huge plays that went for touchdowns during the team period. They were the types of plays that needed a replay based on team celebrations alone. On the first play, quarterback Mitchell Trubisky found wide receiver Deon Cain deep and tossed up a beautiful ball. Cain outran his defenders, caught the ball over his shoulders and ran in for the 60-yard touchdown. Later, Josh Allen located wide receiver Stephen Gosnell near the end zone and threw a dime to his teammate. Gosnell caught the 50-yard pass, stepped into the end zone and spiked the ball in celebration.

Injury updates

Rookie cornerback Maxwell Hairston did not complete Tuesday's practice due to an injury. The team did not provide an immediate update on Hairston following practice.

DT DeWayne Carter (illness), DT Larry Ogunjobi (vet rest), OL Alec Anderson (knee), OL Mike Edwards (heat related from Monday) and WR K.J. Hamler (heat related from Monday), LB Terrel Bernard (hamstring), TE Dawson Knox (hamstring), RT Spencer Brown (back), WR KJ Hamler, WR Kaden Prather, K Tyler Bass (pelvic) and LB Dorian Williams all did not practice.

3 — 'Just Grinding' WR Keon Coleman's approach to year 2 of training camp

As wide receiver Keon Coleman enters his second year of training camp, it's been all about picking up the “trash” that he called his rookie season and cleaning it up with Quarterback Josh Allen, one film room session at a time.

"A lot of film room, understanding what he (Josh) is seeing, and getting my feedback, and then going down the field and executing," shared Coleman.

And he did just that during team periods as Coleman had some impressive catches. After warm ups before team periods the Bills did some 1-on-1's. Coleman lined up against vet cornerback Tre'Davious White and nickel Taron Johnson, but Coleman's best catch of the day was in the last team period where he jumped up in the air and extended to catch a quick 20 yard pass down the sidelines from Josh Allen.

Building off plays like that is what offensive coordinator Joe Brady has enjoyed seeing from Coleman in camp.

"He's so intentional about everything that he does. I think sometimes you get the rap on Keon, because he's an incredible personality. But football is so important to him, and he wants to be perfect in everything that does," stated Brady.

It's been clear here in camp what his main goal is in preparation for year two.

"Just grinding, pretty much with everything coming at me, putting it on the field" shared Coleman.

Turning heads of his new teammate wide receiver Josh Palmer who shared what he's been seeing from Coleman in camp. "Yeah, he's very strong, even coming out of his breaks. He's very elusive. He can change directions, makes the DB think he's going one way, and comes out the other way. He's very exciting to watch just because of the plays that he can make," Palmer said.

The goal for Coleman for the rest of camp and into the season is simple.

"Making more plays," said Coleman.
