Top 5 storylines to follow for Buffalo Bills vs. New York Jets | Week 2

JetsStorylines

The Bills are off and running with a 1-0 start. They'll face their first divisional opponent in Week 2 with a matchup against the Jets.

Here are five storylines to get you ready for Sunday's matchup.

1. Facing a similar skillset in Week 2

Buffalo's defense has things to fix heading into their Week 2 matchup in New Jersey against the Jets after surrendering 40 points to the Ravens last Sunday. Fortunately, a lot of their corrections will be in preparation for an opposing quarterback and running back with very similar skill sets to that of Lamar Jackson and Derrick Henry.

Jets' QB Justin Fields provides New York with a true dual threat at the position, as evidenced by his 12 carries for 48 yards last week against Pittsburgh, while also putting together a 72.7 percent completion game with a touchdown and a 119-passer rating.

Couple that with Jets RB Breece Hall, who isn't a behemoth like Henry, but packs a punch at 5-11 and 217 pounds and runs a 4.39 40-time. The power and speed combo of Hall is certainly similar to that of Henry, who rumbled for 107 yards last week against what was thought to be a stout Pittsburgh run defense, averaging 5.6 yards per carry.

Bills defensive coordinator, Bobby Babich believes their game against Lamar Jackson and Derrick Henry serves as good prep for Fields and Hall this Sunday.

"Absolutely it does," said Babich. "Every week is going to be a little bit different. It's going to present a little bit different. But certainly (Aaron Glenn) has done a great job in New York so far. Their offense did a really nice job (last Sunday). So, we've got our hands full again. It's the NFL and the most important thing is taking care of us."

Hall has had good success against the Bills on the ground. Since 2022, among ball carriers with more than 20 carries, Breece Hall has the third-highest yards per carry average against Buffalo at 6.4 yards per carry behind Lamar Jackson (8.6) and Derrick Henry (7.1).

2. Carrying momentum from Week 1 to Week 2

Buffalo had momentum in their favor during the final quarter of Week 1's game against the Ravens. Defensive tackle Ed Oliver's forced fumble with minutes to play injected an energy into Buffalo's sideline that was palpable. The Bills scored 17 points with less than four minutes to play, which included a walk-off game-winning field goal by kicker Matt Prater.

The vibes were high in the locker room after the victory with plenty of smiles and cheers. It was the type of energy you want to capture in a bottle and save for later. But is that possible to do?

According to Buffalo's coaches there are elements that can carry over to the next week.

"You're looking for qualities that stand out," head coach Sean McDermott said of what the win can do for the team. "…What you're also looking for, other than the result, is the qualities that lead to a successful, good, sound football team. And one of those things is winning a close game early in the year…building resiliency, never quitting, staying connected as a team throughout…I think those are great early signs.

"We've got a lot of work to do at the same time. And it is one game. And in this league, if you get too high on the horse, you will fall rather quickly."

Similar to McDermott, Brady believes there are things you can fall back on, and lessons learned from previous games that can help in the following weeks.

"The team we're playing this week does not care about what happened to us," offensive coordinator Joe Brady said. "But we can in those moments, fall back on what we experienced (versus Baltimore) – there shouldn't be a game we play this year that a player doesn't believe we have a chance to win…I'm sure the guys, they felt a little better waking up with it. So, I think from that sense, you have a little more energy going into this week."

Buffalo will be bringing that energy into facing their first divisional opponent of the season on Sunday. The Jets are a very different team than the one they faced last year thanks to a new coaching staff and a new quarterback. They had the lead against a talented Steelers team going into the final seven minutes of play, but ended up losing by two points (34-32).

The Jets controlled time of possession and scored more than 30 points in Week 1. Quarterback Justin Fields went off for 3 total touchdowns (1 passing, 2 rushing) and completed 72.7% of his passes for 218 yards (119.1 passer rating). Running back Breece Hall ran for 107 yards and wide receiver Garrett Wilson added 95 receiving yards and a receiving touchdown.

3. A new coaching staff in New Jersey

The Jets are looking quite different in 2025. They hired a new head coach in Aaron Glenn on January 22 and a new general manager in Darren Mougey on January 25.

Glenn was previously the defensive coordinator for the Detroit Lions from 2021-24. His defense was top 10 last season allowing an average of 20.1 points per game (7th) and 98.4 rushing yards per game (5th). They had the best 3rd down defense in the league (allow 32.4% conversion rate) and tallied 24 takeaways (t-9th) in 2024.

Glenn's defense held the Steelers to just 53 rushing yards in his first game as the Jets' head coach.

Mougey's last stop was with Denver where he spent 2022-24 as the team's general manager. In his first draft with the Jets, Mougey had three selections in the first 75 picks. They drafted offensive tackle Armand Membou in the first round (No. 7), tight end Mason Taylor in the second (No. 42) and cornerback Azareye'h Thomas in the third (No. 73).

Membou started at right tackle and Taylor saw action in 88% of the snaps in Week 1.

Mougey also made a splash in free agency. He found the Jets' starting quarterback, signing Justin Fields to a two-year deal. The new GM also added two starters on defense, signing cornerback Brandon Stephens to a three-year deal and safety Andre Cisco to a one-year deal.

Tanner Engstrand was hired as the Jets' offensive coordinator in January as well. Glenn knows him well as Engstrand has been with the Lions since 2020. His most recent role was passing game coordinator from 2022-24.

Steve Wilks was named their defensive coordinator in February. Wilks comes to the Jets with a ton of NFL experience. His most recent stop was with the 49ers as their defensive coordinator in 2023.

The Jets' special teams coordinator is Chris Banjo. Banjo spent 2023-24 with the Broncos as an assistant special teams coach. Before that, he played as a safety in the league from 2013-22.

4. Can Allen and offense start like they finished?

What Josh Allen and the offense put together in the fourth quarter last Sunday night was downright magical. Allen was 16-21 passing for 251 yards with one passing touchdown and two rushing touchdowns outscoring Baltimore 22-6 in the final frame to win at the gun, 41-40. He became the first player in league history to throw for more than 250 yards and run for two or more touchdowns in any single quarter of any game.

The question now is can they carry that into their Week 2 game when they open their divisional slate against the Jets?

Bills offensive coordinator, Joe Brady, who is intimately familiar with all the nuances of his quarterback's play and decision making believes that airtight execution is possible earlier in the game as well.

"Seeing what Josh was able to get to, and seeing the coverages and diagnosing it, and knowing where the answers and where to go with the clock going down… I mean, it was at an all-time high, and that's what happened, and the game slows down for him at this point," said Brady. "He was able to see kind of how the game was being played all game. 'All right, I've seen this look, time to get to this.' There were a lot of moments – there were a lot of wows, that's for sure."

And as much as head coach Sean McDermott makes high-pressure moments part of their practice regimen, he believes Allen is naturally conditioned to perform in those pressure-packed moments of a game.

"He's the best quarterback in the NFL for a reason," said McDermott. "He is, we are, very comfortable in those situations. We practice those moments quite a bit. And he has been wired since he came here to want the ball in those situations. He's extremely calm and composed in those situations. And he's an extreme competitor. And it goes beyond Josh, though, from the practice, from the execution piece… I think they go hand in hand."

Buffalo's offense did get off to a good start in their matchup with the Jets on the road last season. They scored touchdowns on three of their first four drives in the game but managed just a field goal the rest of the way to sweat out a 23-20 victory. The Bills will be looking to avoid the lulls that have led to some narrow outcomes on the road as outlined below.

5. Close ones at MetLife

While the Bills have won four of their last five meetings with the Jets, most of them have not been easy, especially when playing at MetLife Stadium. Three of the last four meetings in East Rutherford, New Jersey have been decided by six points or less, with the Jets taking two of the last three at MetLife.

In 2022, Jets' QB Zach Wilson led a 13-play, 86-yard drive to what would be a game-winning 28-yard field goal by Greg Zuerlein with 1:45 left for a 20-17 victory.

In the season opener in 2023, Wilson again came on in place of the injured Aaron Rodgers and took advantage of four turnovers by the Bills turning them into 13 points to force overtime by tying the game at 16. And Xavier Gipson ended the game in overtime with a 65-yard punt return for a game-winning score (22-16).

And last season, the Bills had to scrape and claw to break a 20-20 tie in the fourth quarter as Tyler Bass' 22-yard field goal with 3:43 left proved to be the difference in a 23-20 win.

And both teams are coming off games decided by two points or less in Week 1.

New York is coming off a hard fought two-point loss at home at the hands of the Steelers (34-32) via a 60-yard field goal by Chris Boswell with a minute remaining in regulation.

Meanwhile the Bills just squeaked out a one-point victory over Baltimore with a 32-yard game-winning field goal at the gun (41-40).
