What They're Saying | Analysts offer their key takeaways from Bills vs. Chiefs Week 9 outcome

WTS11.3

Buffalo beat Kansas City 28-21 on Sunday evening, bringing Buffalo's regular season record against their conference foe to 5-1.

Quarterback Josh Allen completed 23 of 26 passes for 273 yards and one touchdown. He also rushed for 19 yards and two touchdowns on the ground. Six of his attempts were completed to tight end Dalton Kincaid. Kincaid logged his second, 100-plus yard game in 2025 and also recorded a touchdown. Running back James Cook kept the run game alive and well, rushing 27 times for 114 yards.

Defensively, safety Cole Bishop was all over Kansas City's offense, posting seven tackles, one more than linebacker and captain Terrell Bernard. Bishop also had four passes defensed. The Bills defense also sacked quarterback Patrick Mahomes three times. Defensive ends Bosa, Michael Hoecht and Greg Rousseau and cornerback Christian Benford were credited with at least half a sack on Sunday.

Here's what experts are saying of Buffalo's overall performance against the Chiefs.

Maxwell Hairston emerges as a weapon, Josh Allen back in MVP conversation | Joe Rivera, Tom Viera, Jacob Camenker, USA TODAY

Rivera, Viera and Camenker's three instant takeaways following the game included two positives from Buffalo's side.

Rookie cornerback Maxwell Hairston was one of them, who had a late-fourth quarter interception and his first pick of his young NFL career.

"If Hairston can continue to make plays and stay with speed receivers, it will give the Bills an element their defense previously lacked on the outside."

The three also commented on Allen's improved pass game as he was credited with three of the four touchdowns scored on Sunday evening. With a "sharp" performance, as USA TODAY described, Allen remains an MVP candidate for 2025.

"Allen continues to perform at a high level and was particularly sharp against the Chiefs … The 29-year-old has gotten more support this season from James Cook, but he should still put himself in the conversation to be the NFL's first back-to-back MVP since Aaron Rodgers in 2020 and 2021."

McAfee made it a point on Monday's show to point out that the Bills played tough against the Chiefs, saying they had a new edge on Sunday.

"It's much better to win than it is to lose in these games and if you watch the way this game went, boy, that Bills team beat the h— out of Patrick Mahomes. There as a string there of three, four straight plays when Patrick Mahomes was just taking huge shots, huge shots, huge shots. It's like this Bills team has a little bit of a different attitude maybe. They seem to be the ones that want to be the aggressors. They're the ones that want to be tougher. They beatdahn the Kansas City Chiefs. I think that is a little bit alarming if you're a Kansas City Chiefs fan. And also, if you're a Buffalo Bills fan, it's like, 'Hey, hold on now. We got a little bit of an edge,' it feels like this team has.

"You got Josh Allen obviously on the offensive side, so you're going to be great on the offensive side of the ball, you would assume. Defense thumpin' this Kansas City Chiefs team as much as they did and obviously making plays all over the place and getting a huge win, great for the Buffalo Bills."

While Allen's elite pass performance of an 85.5 completion percentage, the best in Bills history with a minimum of 15 attempts, Podell did not forget to acknowledge Kincaid's impressive numbers on Sunday.

"Allen was masterful, completing 23 of his 26 throws for 273 yards passing and a touchdown while also adding 19 yards on the ground and two goal line rushing touchdowns … Allen Bills tight end Dalton Kincaid proved to be the X factor in the passing game with just the second 100-yard receiving of his career, catching all six of his targets for 101 yards and a touchdown."

‘I felt Cole out there’ | Sean McDermott, buffalobills.com

Bishop's performance on Sunday stood out to head coach Sean McDermott. In his postgame press conference, McDermott acknowledged the second-year player's development and growth.

"I felt Cole out there. Making big plays, you can sense his speed, and he was popping some people out there. That's, again, the journey of a young player who is taking steps in the right direction. It's because of his preparation. When you get more and more experience, like anything in life, you start to ... understand what it's going to take, what the job description is."

Vacchiano said Allen and Mahomes bring out the best in each other and that Allen's performance, in particular, was "brilliant."

"They are, in many ways, the Tom Brady-Peyton Manning of their era — a matchup everyone wants to see, especially on the biggest stages, and a matchup that never disappoints. It's almost impossible not to root for them to continue their rivalry in January in the AFC Championship Game. If history holds, that would end up being the NFL's Game of the Year."

Allen's righthand man, running back James Cook, also deserved some praise from Vacchiano. He said that Cook adds a new level to the Bills' offense that keeps Buffalo rolling even if Allen isn't on his A-game.

"The Bills' offense still has juice. That's because Allen has never played with a more potent running back than the version of James Cook he has by his side this season … It was his fifth time topping 100 rushing yards in a game this year — not coincidentally, all Bills wins. And while he's not all that dangerous as a receiver, he can be reliable."

'He was on top of his game' | Kyle Brandt, Good Morning Football

Brandt handed out his Game Ball for Week 9 to Bosa, saying he is "everything the Bills have been missing."

"My Game Ball goes to who I believe was the most dominant player in the fourth quarter of Bills v. Chiefs, Joey Bosa. Joey Bosa's an old head in this league. He's been around forever, I remember he won Defensive Rookie of the Year in 2016, and I have not seen him play like he did last night in a while — and I don't mean to slight it. He was on top of his game, he was healthy. Chiefs could not block him. They could not. At the end of the game when they needed Mahomes miracles, they're rolling Mahomes away from Bosa, Andy Reid is going into his bag for different blocking schemes to accommodate for Bosa.

"He is everything the Bills have been missing in terms of a one-game star last night at pass rusher. He was everything they wanted Von Miller to be that never quite was, he's everything they wanted all their homegrown pass rushers to be. And if Bosa stays hot, and for the love of God stays healthy, please, that could be a difference maker in January when we feel like we see the same game every single time."

In the midst of discussing Allen and Mahomes, Bove highlighted Hairston and Bishop's performances against the Chiefs, calling them "unsung heroes."

"We'll start with rookie cornerback Maxwell Hairston, who, after the game, was all smiles as he recalled his first career interception against Mahomes. With four minutes on the clock, Mahomes threw a deep ball intended for Xavier Worthy. Hairston was there to bring it down, giving the ball back to the offense and chewing up three and a half crucial minutes …

"Not to be outdone, second-year safety Cole Bishop was all over the place on Sunday against the Chiefs. In just his 12th NFL start, Bishop had far and away the most impactful game of his career with seven combined tackles and four passes defended."

‘I thought they answered the bell’ | Colin Cowherd and John Middlekauff, The Colin Cowherd Podcast

On Cowherd's podcast, Middlekauff said Buffalo needed a win against Kansas City given its record in the AFC East. The Bills are right below New England in the division, one of their two losses in 2025 after Week 9. While the rivalry between them and the Chiefs is enough to fight for a win, Middlekauff also said Buffalo needs to remain even keeled with the Patriots.

"This year for the Bills, you just have to hold serve with the Patriots. They have an easier schedule than you, they keep taking care of business. If they would have lost today, they would have been at a one-game deficit, and they've already lost to them. So, there was a lot of pressure and in fairness, I thought they answered the bell. Beside a couple plays in the second half, they were really good."

Cowherd said Mahomes' comfort level, or lack thereof, played a huge role in Sunday's outcome. Buffalo's defense had three sacks and 15 quarterback hits. Cowherd said that the Bills defense played with more intensity given the high-par opponent.

"Bosa is healthy, he's 30, Greg Rousseau [is] 25, A.J. Epenesa is 27 – you know, these guys are in their athletic prime and they've drafted pretty well in the backend … we talk a lot about Buffalo's defense all year … defensive players are about wrecking things, and I do think when you take that Buffalo defensive front and they play Mahomes, they play differently … the defensive front [on Sunday] for Buffalo knew the red light was on. That's what it felt like to me. It felt like they played with way more energy. Many of the same players played above what they've been playing at all year."

‘He’s an absolute stud’ | Josh Allen, buffalobills.com

After the game, Allen was asked about Kincaid. The quarterback had nothing but positive things to say about his tight end who continues progressing game-by-game in Allen's eyes.

"He's an absolute stud. He continues to get better and better, and I feel like each week he's getting better and he's getting healthier, which is awesome. So it kind of shows you the type of player that he is and can be. He's going to continue to progress, and my relationship and my trust in him is only going to continue to grow."
