What They're Saying | NFL analysts react to Buffalo's comeback win in AFC East battle against New England

WTS12.15

The Bills had another comeback win on Sunday for the second consecutive week. The win over AFC East rival New England kept Buffalo in the race for the division. Here's what NFL analysts are saying about the Bills' 35-31 win over the Patriots:

Joe Buscaglia gave quarterback Josh Allen his props for his second half performance. Despite low numbers, Allen still led his team to a victory from being down 21 points.

"The AFC East is still very much in play for the Bills because of the play of the reigning NFL MVP, Allen. Even though he had only 193 yards passing, he was a monster the entire second half. The Bills had no business winning this game with the way it started and needed a nearly perfect second half to come away with the win — but win they did."

On top of Allen's second half performance, Buffalo's defense made necessary adjustments at halftime. While giving up 31 points isn't how defensive coordinator Bobby Babich wants to live, the Bills didn't quit.

"The defense was sensational when it comes to adjustments. They did to Drake Maye what we call a rolodex. Drake Maye in the second half their final four drives on second and third down, that's eight different plays, never once saw the same defense. It was a rolodex of defense when it comes to cover six, cover two, cover four, man pressure, fire zone, everything. You saw that stall New England's offense."

Buffalo took the lead for the first time against New England in the fourth quarter. Fourteen seconds later, the Patriots were back on top with a 65-yard touchdown run from running back TreVeyon Henderson. The Bills bounced back, reclaiming the lead. With the two-minute warning approaching, quarterback Drake Maye had an opportunity. A five-yard completion was practically nullified due to a sack Maye took. His final two throws were incomplete, one deflected by defensive end Joey Bosa. Henry McKenna compared Maye's and Allen's performances in desperate times.

"In the Bills-Patriots Week 15 matchup, Maye had multiple opportunities to produce an MVP moment
Maye couldn't get it done. Allen snatched away that MVP moment. In turn, the Bills kept the Patriots from clinching the AFC title — for now. And Allen may have pushed past Maye in the MVP hunt
Buffalo might just be the most dangerous team in the AFC in the playoffs. And it's all because of what we saw on Sunday. Allen will beat you when he has to. Allen will beat you when he's desperate
Allen might win another MVP. Allen might even win another AFC East title. But more important to him, he might win a Super Bowl."

The Bills snapped the Patriots' 10-game win streak and handed them their lost AFC East loss of the 2025 season. In doing so, Buffalo kept itself in the race to clinch the division while proving its worthy of claiming that top spot. Pete Prisco emphasized in the game's aftermath that the Bills' resiliency powered by Allen is scary for teams on their way to the playoffs.

"That game shows you that Buffalo is still relevant in the while big picture of the AFC. And I've been saying this a long time, I think they're the one team – you know how I feel about that team – they're the one team nobody's going to want to play in the postseason. It doesn't mean they're going to win it all, but it's the one team you don't want to play because of that guy. Josh Allen took that game over in the second half
 This was about Josh Allen
You're down 21 [to] nothing, you could've packed it up and gone home. The weather's bad, it's nasty, it's cold – not that they're not used to that – and they didn't. That tells you a lot about that team."

'Put the cape on, son' | Rich Eisen, Rich Eisen Show

Following Allen's performance on Sunday, Rich Eisen noted a new record for the young quarterback. He's the fourth player in NFL history to have 35 or more touchdowns in six career seasons. Aaron Rodgers and Tom Brady are ahead of Allen with seven seasons. Eisen said Allen will "eviscerate" that record by the end of his career.

"I don't know what the hell Sean McDermott told this team in the locker room. Maybe he just turned to Josh Allen and [said]
'Put on the cape, son.' And he did
 He's unbelievable."

'Allen gave the Bills belief' | Albert Breer, Sports Illustrated

Albert Breer noted it wasn't Allen's best statistical performance, but his resilience and leadership is unmatched. He wrote that after the game, head coach Sean McDermott said there's no doubt in his mind who the MVP of the NFL is.

"More than anything else, Allen gave the Bills belief when they were down 21–0 midway through the second quarter, 24–7 at the half, and even after a very game Patriots team swung back at them with TreVeyon Henderson's 65-yard touchdown run, which seemed to stem the tide of 21 consecutive Buffalo points.

So how does that belief show up? First and foremost, the Bills are never out of a game, no matter how poorly things start. Buffalo's now won four of five, erasing second-half deficits in each. It closed out the Bucs on a 23–6 run, the Steelers on a 23–0 run, the Bengals on a 21–6 run, and the Patriots on a 35–7 run."

Buffalo had 53 rushing yards in the first half with running back James Cook only accumulating 32 yards on seven carries. The Bills' offense always wants to establish the run game with the kind of star they have in Cook, but it took more time on Sunday getting Cook going. Still, offensive coordinator Joe Brady didn't stray from a key part of the offense's identity despite its slowed production in the first half.

"The Bills have plenty of faults. Josh Allen once again reminded us he can overcome them all
Allen was magnificent. So, too, was Cook. But let's give some credit to Joe Brady for not just giving up on the run, even when trailing by multiple scores."

After another superhero effort from Allen on Sunday, Damien Harris didn't forget about not only the Bills' defense, but all the offensive pieces around Allen that helped make that win possible. Specifically, Harris gave all three running backs their flowers: Cook, Ray Davis and Ty Johnson.

"Josh Allen showed today he is still the reigning Most Valuable Player in the National Football League. And he's had a couple games like that. They've lost a couple games here and there that have made us forget about the greatness of Josh Allen, but it was on full display today. The way he played, absolutely outstanding. Creating plays, running the football, hitting those throws in the second half. He was phenomenal.

But I do want to talk about the rest of the team because they played their part in the second half
What did the Buffalo Bills do? They came out, they punched New England in the mouth. What did the defense do? They started to get pressure on Drake Maye, which got New England's offense out of rhythm
Let's talk about all the running backs because they all played a key role in this football game. You look at Ray Davis and setting up the return game, setting up the offense with the kickoff returns. You look at what James Cook was able to do to be the steady workhorse. Look at Ty Johnson
When the game was on the line, third down and they had to have it, they didn't give it to James Cook, they gave it to Ty Johnson. Another experienced back that has played at a high level for them all year. So, I definitely want to give Josh Allen his credit, he played like the best quarterback in the NFL today, but I'm really proud of the rest of the guys that stepped up around him in that second half."
