Thursday injury updates and practice notes
The Bills held a walkthrough practice on Thursday in preparation for Sunday's game against the Jets.
Six players were limited for the practice – DB Jordan Hancock (shoulder), CB Taron Johnson (quad), TE Dawson Knox (hip), DE Greg Rousseau (knee), LB Shaq Thompson (hamstring/hand) and CB Tre'Davious White (groin). DT Ed Oliver (ankle) was the only player that did not participate in the walkthrough. Good news for a couple players – RB James Cook (hamstring) and CB Brandon Codrington (knee) were limited on Wednesday but participated in full on Thursday.
Buffalo is getting ready to face a Jets defense that's stacked with talent, which includes a familiar face. Former Bills defensive tackle Harrison Phillips plays for the Jets. The DT played for the Bills from 2018-21 and the Vikings from 2022-24 before getting traded to the Jets in August.
"I can't wait to see Harrison, too," left tackle Dion Dawkins said. "Harrison knows the energy that goes into Jets week, so we'll see Harrison soon."
Dawkins is known for bringing the competitive energy into division game weeks. The LT is focusing on how he can improve in Week 2.
"We protected Josh the right way," Dawkins said of their Week 1 performance. "I think there was a coverage sack, and I had two penalties…We can always be better. The game, the individuals, we can always be better, but we buckled up and we fought."
Wide receiver Keon Coleman had a lot of fight in him last week. Coleman led all Bills receivers with eight catches for 112 receiving yards and a touchdown against Baltimore. It was Coleman's second-career game with more than 100 receiving yards.
Even before Week 1's big performance, Dawkins was banging the drum for Coleman. The LT gave a ton of praise to the young WR saying he had a great training camp and preseason.
"It's beautiful," Dawkins said of watching him go off for 112 yards. "I think if people doubted it, they're crazy because I see him every day…And now look, everybody's like, 'Wow that was a breakout game.' Well, he's going to have a breakout season."
Coleman will likely see a good amount of cornerback Sauce Gardner in Sunday's matchup, if Gardner is good to play. He was limited in Thursday's practice with a groin injury. The All-Pro's has had three interceptions since being drafted in 2022.
The Jets played in man coverage on 50% of their snaps in Week 1 against the Steelers according to Fantasy Points Data. Coleman said when facing man, he must win his matchups.
"He's a good cornerback, does some things well," Coleman said. "And it's my job to make him wrong. So go out there, win my matchups and make plays."
The Jets surrendered 218 passing yards and four passing touchdowns to the Steelers in a Week 1 loss.
