Bills quarterback Josh Allen is the AFC Offensive Player of the Month for September after leading the Bills to a 3-1 record through September. This is Allen's third overall Offensive Player of the Month award and first time winning it since he did it twice in the 2020 season.
Allen's playmaking ability was on full display, leading all AFC quarterbacks in offensive touchdowns (9), passer rating (116.5), passing touchdown-interception ratio (7-0) and total passing touchdowns (7).
Through September, Allen has thrown for 814 yards and ran with the football for 106 yards and two scores on the ground.
"Yeah, he's been very consistent in his performance on the field, consistent in his approach, consistent in his just willingness to take what the defense is giving him," head Coach Sean McDermott said before their game against the Ravens. "And I think that's probably the biggest thing I've witnessed over the course of the first three games of the season. Season's young, and so I'm looking forward to how he's going to continue to do that… his maturation, his development has been fun to watch."
Among his accomplishments in September, in Week 1, Allen recorded his fourth career game with two or more passing touchdowns and two or more rushing touchdowns, tying Pro Football Hall of Fame Quarterback Steve Young with the most all-time (4).
In addition, Allen's 101 consecutive pass attempts without an interception are the most by a Bills quarterback to start a season since Joe Ferguson recorded 108 before throwing an interception in 1976.
"I think we just stick to the program and what we're doing," Allen said. "I think focusing more on the process than the results right now, and it's been serving us well, but the moment you start thinking about the end goal is when you get into trouble. So, practicing hard, putting in the work throughout the week, making sure that we're still watching the film, we're still getting together, making sure we're talking through things, and again, just making sure that we're relying on each other when we're on the field."
In his first full year operating offensive coordinator Joe Brady's offense, and a reworked receiver group from the 2023 season, Allen and the offense have been utilizing the mantra "everybody eats." It has been successful for the offense so far as the Bills have recorded multiple games in which Allen has found 8 or more targets and on Sunday night against the Ravens became the first team to have four ball carriers score rushing touchdowns.
"It's very encouraging," Allen said. "We're building each other up right now and that's all we're trying to do and trying to stay together as a team. We're really caring about each other and everybody in this building's got that feeling."
When Allen won AFC Offensive Player of the Week after his week three performance against the Jacksonville Jaguars, Allen credited his offensive line for all of the success that they have been having in the first quarter of the year.
"It's a shame our o-line can't win offensive player of the week, cause they played their tails off, and even going back to week two, James was able to win that because of what our o-line's doing," Allen said. "So, making sure that they're getting love, and they're getting the praises... they deserve it, because they're playing together, they're playing very well, they're communicating well. It's easy to play quarterback behind these guys right now because of how hard they work and how well they're executing."
