The Bills had their final practice of the week before the preseason starts. Here's what we learned Thursday.

Joe Brady on what to expect from Bills starters in preseason opener

With the first preseason game of the season coming up this Saturday, Bills head coach Joe Brady plans for all of his healthy players to see playing time against the Carolina Panthers.

This should include quarterback Josh Allen, who was held out of all three preseason contests in 2025. Brady wants to give his players another opportunity to play in the new stadium, planning to have everyone suit up to start the day.

"I want to see guys get hit, I want to see guys tackle, I want to see the finishing of the play," Brady said. "... There's so many variables with it. We obviously have a new everything, so it's our first opportunity for us to come together and show an example of what the Buffalo Bills are about, too."

Keeping Allen fresh and healthy is at the top of Brady's mind as Saturday grows closer, while also valuing getting as many game reps as possible.

Despite just being preseason, the new head coach is hoping to see the same quarterback he's grown accustomed to, while also being smart about not putting himself in harm's way.

"This is NFL football, and guys are fighting for their lives, there's a physicality," Brady said. "If you kind of just dip your toe in, that's when I think bad stuff happens. If we're out there going, we're going. I would hope that he is mindful of that, but I want him to be competitive and be Josh Allen. I hope that everybody else embraces that same mindset and makeup; 'Let's go play some football.'"

Getting on the field for the preseason is something Allen is looking forward to, continuing to get himself as ready as possible for when games start to really matter.

"I would love to play," Allen said. "To get out there and get a good feeling and a good sense of the game and a good sense of the guys around me, I feel like that's important to do."

Brady didn't share exactly how much playing time the starters will see on Saturday, waiting to see how the game goes to make a decision on when to take them out.

He'll also keep tabs on how the last couple of days of practice have fared before making any decisions, wanting to head into the game with the best understanding of what would be most beneficial to each player.

"Sometimes it's not necessarily just plays, some of it impacts drives and the flow of the game and how things are going," Brady said. "... We have an idea what that's going to look like, but I want us to have a really good practice and see how the bodies and everything kind of turns out from there."

Greg Rousseau continues an impressive start to the season

Outside linebacker Greg Rousseau is another starter for the Bills looking forward to the preseason, itching to show off the team's new-look defense under defensive coordinator Jim Leonhard.

The 26-year-old has put together an impressive camp in his new role standing up on the edge, ready to truly unleash it for the first time of 2026.

"It's gonna be cool to be able to have the new scheme in a real life setting, against another team," Rousseau said. "It's gonna be fun just to try different things and see how things happen on the field and in the stadium compared to in practice."

Thursday was another big day for the outside linebacker at practice, starting his day off by dropping into coverage in 7-on-7s and picking up RB Frank Gore Jr. on a route out of the backfield. Rousseau was all over the pass, swatting it to the ground to show off his versatility up front.

In the first play of 11-on-11s, Rousseau met James Cook III on a handoff to the right side for an impressive run stop. The following play showcased his pass rushing skills, getting through on the right edge for a sack.

He created havoc multiple other times later on, creating pressure on Allen on the initial play of the second full team period. The offense tried a toss to Rousseau's side on the final drive of the day, quickly coming to a halt due to his quick penetration into the backfield.

"The more reps we get together with each other, I feel like the camaraderie and the chemistry builds, and it's easier to make plays," Rousseau said. "I feel like I've been playing fast the whole camp. I'm just trying to build some momentum for the season and trying to get ready to have a good year."

Joe Brady gives injury updates ahead of the preseason

A number of players on both sides of the ball have been dealing with injuries over the last few days of training camp, and Brady gave the media updates on the group.

C Connor McGovern, RB Ty Johnson, CB Maxwell Hairston and S Cole Bishop were all mentioned, with Brady explaining that all four players are dealing with "lower body" injuries.

He didn't give a timetable as to when each player will return, noting that it was similar to the situation dealing with S C.J. Gardner-Johnson's injury earlier in camp where each player will come back whenever they're ready.

"There's guys that are banged up that are pushing through things, there's certain guys that there's history that we got to be a little more intentional," Brady said. "There are certain guys that if this was a game week would be probably practicing today or getting ready. No two people are the exact same situation, and we have a lot of conversations about it. I feel strongly about how we've done things and where we're at, and continue to progress."
