Wednesday morning, Bills running back RB James Cook put pen to paper and signed a four-year contract extension, keeping the two-time Pro Bowler in Buffalo through 2029.

General manager Brandon Beane detailed that negotiations progressed far enough Tuesday night that it would be go time the following morning.

"I think it was roughly 11 o'clock or so last night when we were able to say both sides are good with this, and we'll get it signed in the morning," Beane said.

The Bills drafted Cook in the second round of the 2022 draft and he has constantly been improving year over year. The RB had a record-breaking year in 2024, with 16 rushing touchdowns (tying for the most in the league) and tied for the most in a single season in Bills history (O.J. Simpson – 1975).

For Cook, being able to stay in Buffalo and continue to be on a team with guys that he considers family reminds him that he is where he is supposed to be.

"This is the place that drafted me. The fans are good, the community is good, and just the team we got, man, we play as one. We are brothers and we have a good bond. It all shows they got my back," shared Cook.

Cook is not the only one from the 2022 draft class who signed extensions this offseason. WR Khalil Shakir, LB Terrel Bernard and CB Christian Benford all signed extensions, making Cook the fourth from that class to sign.

"You guys know our motto here. We want to draft and develop and re-sign," shared Beane.

Beane's approach to this motto shows the faith that they have in the players they draft.

"I don't think any of these players that we extended have hit their ceiling. I don't think they're on the backside of their career. We're looking for these guys to continue to ascend as players at their respective positions," the GM said.

While Cook decided to hold-in from Aug. 3 until Aug. 12, the organization didn't have any lingering questions about the RB's commitment to the team.

"He was at walk-throughs, he was at meetings, and he was just there physically, like he was engaged in those things, and engaged with his teammates," shared Beane.

For the Bills, it was important to them that Cook return to practice before resuming negotiations on a new contract. Cook's hold-in ended Tuesday as he returned to the field.

"I had to show my loyalty to my team and my teammates. They always got my back, so I got their back, too. So just showing them that I'm willing to not be a problem … and just practice was important," Cook said.

Having Cook put pen to paper and closing the deal means Buffalo keeps another one of their homegrown talents around for years to come.

"Love Jimbo … he's an explosive talent … I'm so proud of where he has grown on and off the field, from the day we drafted him to now rewarding him with this extension," Beane said.

Many of Cook's teammates were excited for him, including LB Joe Andreessen.

"James is one of our brothers, and we want what's best for him. We were happy for him when we heard," shared Andreessen.

Fellow 2022 draft class member Christian Benford shared how proud he is of Cook.

"I'm happy for him, he stuck it out. I thank the Lord that he got something. That he's happy with. I'm blessed and honored for him. Benford said. "He's a great kid, hard worker."

With Cook's mind cleared and his family by his side, there's only one more thing left to do.

"Now it's time for us to go play football and show them why we belong here," added Cook.
