1 – How will the Buffalo receiver pecking order shake out?
The Bills receiving corps once again underwent a fair amount of change in the offseason. Elijah Moore didn't last the season. Not retained were Curtis Samuel and late season pickup Brandin Cooks.
On the way in, trade acquisition DJ Moore, free agent signee Trent Sherfield for a second go round, and fourth-round pick Skyler Bell.
It's relatively clear that Moore was acquired to be the team's top playmaker in the passing game outside. He has been effective in establishing an on-field rapport with Josh Allen through the course of OTAs and minicamp. And he made more than his share of plays in 11-on-11 work.
Khalil Shakir is expected to be next in the pecking order after leading the team in receptions and receiving yards last season.
And though Dalton Kincaid will have a prominent role in the passing game he is not part of this discussion dealing with receivers only.
Beyond those primary pass catchers are three receivers believed to be battling for the number three and four roles on the depth chart.
Keon Coleman, Josh Palmer, and rookie Skyler Bell. What makes this competition interesting is their skill sets could not be more different. Coleman is the physical, contested catch wideout. Palmer is the intermediate to deep threat who relies on speed and route precision. And Bell is a pure separator capable of threatening all three levels of the field.
Coleman, much like he did a year ago, made his presence felt in the spring practices in the passing game. Josh Allen noted that Coleman has made marked improvement with his releases off the line, something he worked on with former Bills receiver Stevie Johnson on his own time. He knows 2026 will largely be a make-or-break year for him knowing the shortcomings of his 2025 campaign.
"It's time to put it all together," he said. "Potential things I don't really care to hear them. It's time for me to just put it out there on the field."
The key for Coleman is to put in another strong camp like he did last summer and then carry it through to the regular season if he wants to be on the field more than Palmer or Bell.
For Palmer, the 2025 season was also a disappointment. His knee and ankle injuries in the Week 6 Monday Night loss at Atlanta right when he was putting together a breakout game derailed his season. He appeared in just six more games and never recorded more than two receptions in any one of them. He subsequently missed the team's playoff run.
He missed a good portion of the spring practices as he was still recovering from the ankle injury he sustained during the season, but Palmer was able to rejoin the practice setting in mandatory minicamp.
"I'm feeling a lot better," said Palmer. "I'm feeling a lot more like myself pre-injury. It's taken a lot of time. It was difficult but I was able to get back. I learned a lot from last season, and I'm more mentally prepared for the grind of the season, close games, ups and downs with the offense. So, I'm just preparing for that."
Bell meanwhile was one of Buffalo's fourth-round draft choices and is coming off a highly productive final college season in which he had over 100 receptions (101) for almost 1,300 yards and 13 receiving touchdowns.
The rookie has worked hard to master the voluminous offensive playbook to enable him to play faster and more naturally. By the close of minicamp Bell felt he had made good progress.
"I'm getting there," said Bell. I'm better than I was the first week I was out on the field. Plays are starting to come fast. I'm starting to know what I have (assignment wise). I'm starting to play a bit faster. I just want to make sure that I can go out there with no thoughts and be me, the same me that got me here."
If Coleman's releases off the line are as good as Allen has indicated it could be the key to unlocking the big wideout's playmaking ability on a more consistent basis. That could put him right behind Moore and Shakir in the receiver pecking order.
Palmer still has some ground to make up coming off the lengthy offseason rehabilitation but is a seasoned veteran who should hit the ground running.
And if Bell can master the playbook, he could be more of a factor in the competition for receiver three and four on the roster.
2 – Will the Bills throw more under head coach Joe Brady?
Since Joe Brady took over play calling duties back in Week 11 of the 2023 season, the offense has leaned more heavily on the run game than most offenses in the league. Over those last seven games in the 2023 regular season Buffalo ran the ball 53 percent of the time. That dipped in 2024 to 48.5 percent but bounced back last season to 52.4 percent as James Cook led the league in rushing.
There is no arguing that the Bills, with a Second Team All-Pro, and three-time Pro Bowl back in Cook, and a top-flight offensive line can run the ball very effectively. The prevailing question is whether the heavy lean into the run game was Joe Brady's choosing or that of former head coach Sean McDermott?
Brady did not hint at such a situation when asked about James Cook's workload last season in which he had 309 carries.
"I don't think you ever go into each game with a mindset of, 'This is how many carries he's going to have.' But it does pile up throughout the season, and I give him a lot of credit," said Brady. "I would love to be able to get Ray (Davis), Ty (Johnson), Frank (Gore Jr.) those guys involved and I hope those opportunities come up this year. James was just playing at such a high level last year. And this year again we're looking at everything."
Analytics have conclusively proven that the most efficient way to gain yards and score points is by throwing the ball. And Buffalo has a quarterback who many feel is the best in the game.
The Bills also made their most concerted offseason effort to bolster the receiving corps since they traded for Stefon Diggs in 2020. Back then they acquired Diggs and drafted Gabe Davis in round four. This offseason they traded for veteran WR DJ Moore and drafted Skyler Bell in round four.
The 2020 season was the year that then offensive coordinator Brian Daboll unleashed the full capabilities of Josh Allen on the rest of the league. The Bills threw the ball 59 percent of the time over the 2020 and 2021 seasons and threw more on first down than any other team in the league.
Not surprisingly, those two seasons still stand as Allen's highest two passing yardage (4,544 and 4,404 yards) and passing touchdown totals (37 and 36) in his career. More importantly, the Bills averaged 31.3 and 28.4 points per game good for second and third in the league in those seasons.
In the two full years with Brady calling the plays, the Bills have been largely the same in terms of points production averaging 30.9 in 2024 and 28.4 in 2025 good for second and fourth in the league.
Perhaps Daboll threw it more because he had a less talented back in Devin Singletary than Brady has in James Cook. But Cook could be a reason to throw it more as well. He was largely a pass catching back in college in a stacked offensive backfield at Georgia. The thought of him catching the ball in space is tantalizing.
Couple that with the addition of offensive coordinator Pete Carmichael. The Sean Payton disciple was part of a staff in New Orleans that saw feature back Alvin Kamara catch at least 80 passes in four consecutive seasons. Perhaps more of James Cook's touches come via receptions.
With Brady's mantra of 'Put the ball down' and 'They have to play us,' and Brandon Beane's efforts to augment the receiving corps with a proven playmaker via trade and mid-round draft choice, it's hard not to think that they're trying to revive Allen's high-flying seasons of the recent past.
In no way is this an indictment on what has been a highly successful offense the past two seasons as outlined above. But knowing that Beane and Brady are looking for any tweak or change they believe could give their team an edge and finally get them over the playoff hump to the ultimate game, putting the ball in Josh Allen's hands more often would be a logical end point at which to arrive.
If the Bills do in fact wind up throwing it more, the next question is to what degree? Does it get as extreme as nearly 60 percent pass as it was under Daboll with a lot more throwing on first down? Or is it somewhere in between that heavy pass level and the heavy run percentage of the past couple of seasons?
3 – Who will be the starting left guard?
With the free agent departure of David Edwards for a big money contract with New Orleans this past March, the left guard position is the only starting job on offense without an incumbent from the year before. As the spring practice sessions wound down it was evident that the starting job was largely a two-man competition.
Alec Anderson, whose role has grown with each passing season since he was signed as an undrafted rookie, is one of those candidates. After playing right tackle in college at UCLA, the Bills transitioned him inside to guard and center.
But last season when the Bills were without each of their starting offensive tackles, Anderson capably manned right tackle in a win at Pittsburgh. But the starting left guard spot looks like an ideal fit for an offensive lineman who possesses an attacking style demeanor and an edge to his game. Grinding against the league's defensive tackles seems to be his idea of an enjoyable day at the office.
"Alec has played a lot of football here," said Brady, who has witnessed Anderson's entire career on staff. "We've got guys who have been vets that have played a lot in the NFL. We got some draft picks. It's going to be a great opportunity for a lot of guys to compete."
Anderson's chief competition appears to be free agent signee, Austin Corbett. The eight-year veteran is a more than capable starter, but what made him attractive to the Bills was his expansive knowledge of Buffalo's offensive line techniques.
Corbett played under former offensive line coach Aaron Kromer after he was traded to the Rams by the Browns in 2019. Bills current offensive line coach Pat Meyer is a known disciple of Kromer's in the coaching ranks having coached under him as an assistant in Chicago, with the Bills from 2015-2016.
For Corbett, the transition to the Bills has been very smooth and it's why he is likely to be Anderson's stiffest competition when the team arrives at training camp.
Third-year lineman, Sedrick Van Pran Granger is a dark horse candidate and could wedge his way into the conversation with a strong camp, but heading to St. John Fisher it appears that it's Anderson with the inside track and Corbett as his primary challenger.
Performance in camp and the preseason will ultimately determine who wins the job.
