Former NFL Defensive Player of the Year, Bob Sanders, spent Tuesday afternoon and evening visiting with the Bills. The free agent safety was released late last week by the Indianapolis Colts.
Having been released Sanders is immediately free to sign with any NFL club right now. Sanders, who is set to turn 30 on Thursday, had dinner with Bills defensive coordinator George Edwards Tuesday evening.
Sanders is considered one of the biggest game changers in the league at the safety position. However, staying healthy has proven to be an issue for the defensive back and it ultimately prompted his release from Indianapolis last Friday.
He missed almost all of the 2010 season with a biceps injury sustained in the season opener. He has played in nine games the past three seasons.
The last year in which he played close to a full season was 2007 when he logged 96 tackles, 3.5 sacks, two interceptions and was named Defensive Player of the Year. He also earned a Pro Bowl nod that season.
Buffalo has a pair of safeties that are set to become free agents this offseason in Donte Whitner and George Wilson. Whitner, who made 16 starts last season had 140 tackles, an interception, a forced fumble and a half sack in 2010. Wilson had a pair of starts on defense contributing 35 tackles and a pair of interceptions, and led the team in special teams tackles.
Sanders, who visited with the Jacksonville Jaguars earlier in the week, has only until March 3rd to sign with an NFL club if there is no new labor agreement reached by midnight March 4th.
