Stephon Gilmore making progress

He was out on the practice field Wednesday, but he was not participating. That's still a ways off, but Stephon Gilmore, who is working his way back from wrist surgery is encouraged by his progress.

Having already shed the cast, Gilmore is wearing just an immobilizer brace on his left wrist.

"It feels better. I'm just trying to listen to the trainers, listen to whatever they tell me to do," said Gilmore. "Trying to get a little bit of conditioning in and go from there."

Gilmore, who rode the stationary bike at practice and got stretched by athletic trainers feels he's taken a step forward.

"I'm just trying to take it day by day and get a little conditioning in and stay in football mode so when I'm ready to come back I'll be ready," said Gilmore.

Ironically, on the play he fractured the wrist Gilmore was struck by a fellow defensive back.

"Actually it was friendly fire," said Gilmore. "Aaron (Williams) was coming in for a tackle and I was going in for a tackle and he hit my hand. It's part of the game. It happens. I had to get surgery. I'm getting better and better every day."

Gilmore was defending a short completion by Washington WR Aldrick Robinson on a 2nd-and-8 at the Washington 19 with 10:52 left in the second quarter. Williams comes flying in from the middle of the field to assist on the tackle and hits Gilmore's wrist as he's wrapping up on the receiver.

The Bills top cornerback still doesn't have a timetable as to when he'll have a chance to return to practice or play in a game, but he does have a doctor's appointment Tuesday.

As far as how it feels Gilmore says it's improved, but it's far from perfect.

"It feels better," said Gilmore. "I've got pins in it so it feels stiff, but it feels better than when I first had the surgery."
