Under Center with HOF QB Jim Kelly: Week 13

Another great opportunity has presented itself for Trent Edwards as he becomes the Buffalo Bills starting quarterback this week against the Washington Redskins. Unfortunately for J.P. Losman his career with the Bills has not gone as planned, and his long-term future with the team is up in the air.

Trent now has the opportunity to show he can become the future quarterback of the Buffalo Bills, who have been on a quest for a long-term leader. As a player all you can do is ask for an opportunity to show you have the ability to get the job done.

Every quarterback would love to have a strong arm, be accurate and have great knowledge of football. In the final games of the season, we'll get to see what attributes Trent can bring to the team. In the limited time he has played this season I've been impressed with his progressions and how he throws the ball accurately and on time to his receivers. He has the confidence to get the job done, and now it's just a matter of him proving it to his teammates and the Buffalo fans.

Of course a productive running game is always beneficial in keeping pressure off the quarterback, especially for a young player. But this is the National Football League and the quarterback gets paid big money to step up and make plays when needed. If the running game is limited due to injuries to Marshawn Lynch and Anthony Thomas, then there is a greater emphasis for Trent to get the ball out of his hand quickly and into the receivers' hands so they can make plays after the catch.

Finally, the tragic news of Sean Taylor's death has left everyone saddened and it certainly puts the game of football into perspective. It will be difficult for both teams to prepare and play football this week but all the coaches and players realize that this is their profession and they have a job to do.

My prayers go out to Sean's family.
