Bills place kicker Tyler Bass on injured reserve

BassIR

The Buffalo Bills placed kicker Tyler Bass on injured reserve with a left hip/groin injury, the team announced Friday afternoon. Bass will now miss a minimum of four games, including Sunday's Week 1 matchup against the Ravens.

In all likelihood, that sets up veteran Kicker Matt Prater to fill in for Bass on Sunday. The Bills signed Prater to the team's practice squad earlier this week. In order to be eligible to play, Buffalo must either elevate Prater from the practice squad to the active roster by 4 p.m. Saturday or sign him to the active roster.

Prater can be elevated from the PS a maximum of three times before the team must choose to either sign him to the active roster or release him.

Prater has nearly 20 years of NFL experience and holds the record for most field goal makes from at least 50 yards with 81. His longest makes are from 62 and 64 yards out. He's made 407 of 487 (83.6%) field goals in his NFL career.

Bass was limited in Wednesday's practice and did not participate in Thursday or Friday's practice. Bills head coach Sean McDermott said Bass has been dealing with soreness in the affected area.
